In my defense
I’ve had the flu (not Covid) during the course of this project. Here’s what I looked like during the F360 session where I designed that sign:
Wow! Is that the new Muskrat plug needed to deal with @Bigdaddy2166 's genetically modified Muskrats?
I cut one of these as a gift for a friend who runs an auto repair business. Cut quality was poor due to a beveling issue I recently developed. But with 16 & 18 gauge it’s not so bad I’d scrap the pieces. I just haven’t had time to investigate yet.
Chris Yops posted the top portion to Fireshare:
Great looking sign!
But you know when you say this, now we gotta know more:

I know you don’t need our help to figure it out…we just want to know if it is what we are supposing.
Like “CLUE”: Colonel Mustard, in the garage, with a torch mounted loosely.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. After I exhaust the ideas in my tiny cerebral ram, I may be hitting up the forum knowledge. Glad to know help is only a few keystrokes away ![]()
Good guess on loose torch. I had a minute this morning and checked that first. It was tight, but even with the naked eye I could see it is not exactly square to the x-axis tube.
I need to buy a small level to confirm, but I placed a small rubber shim in between the lower portion of the torch and the bracket to get it back to where visually it looks square. May be a temp countermeasure anyway. I’ll try a few cuts to see if that eliminates the bevel.
With not much time to investigate, but it almost seems like the bracket is no longer vertical, like it got bent. Everything seems secure but I will check better soon.
Funny story on why I’m cutting it for my friend. I bought a Gazoo Racing version of the Corolla about a year ago. He’s been wanting to drive it but every time I go to his house, he’s in the garage and dirty. I won’t let him in my car.
I know how you feel. A very dear friend, who has since passed away rode in our car and was wearing a dressy, black, leather jacket. My first thought is that was really odd for him to have such a jacket: he was the rugged outdoor type. His wife confessed that she got it at a second hand store.
It was our current Lexus RX350 with cream colored leather seats. It was raining. The next morning there were black streaks and smudges dried into my leather seat all over the seat back. Obviously, someone used some sort of shoe polish or something on that jacket. It took me 6 hours and four different products before I got most of the stain gone. Some still remains. He passed away 5 years ago. I never told him about it: He would have been horrified.
The bearings on the X carriage are adjustable to adjust the forward/backward tilt of the carriage.
Thanks, that is a possibility, and I’ll definitely check it out. I just haven’t had time to figure out what the real cause is for the tilt. It came on so suddenly was why I was suspicious it had gotten banged and bent. Plus, I let a guy use my shop last week to build a e-bike carrier and I thought maybe he banged it and didn’t know or say anything.
You’re right though it may just need adjustment. I may be just thinking pessimistically.
Just finished up another piece today.
Then I have to admit I lied to bigdaddy in another thread. I do know what makes my wife happy
. I am a lucky man!![]()
That is a great sign Phillip!!!
We knew you were teasing about your wife…glad you admitted it.
Thanks @ChelanJim . I do several farm logos. I have a friend that owns a feed store. The butters up to his customers and throws me a bone too.
I saw a shirt the other day it said I fish because it’s the only place she won’t go …
I just about can’t go alone…
Man, that barbed wire is so cool! And the scuffing swirls look good too.
I need to come up with design where I can use that concept.
Thank you most people love the look … I didn’t coin the term but I call it brushed metal. I used a 120 grit flap disk laid down flat then super mirror clear powder coat.
I just did that “Dirty Hands” sign above and that technique would have been perfect. The sheet had a line running through it. You can see it in the pic between 12 and 1 o’clock positions.
Tried sanding it out, but no bueno.
When wet painting bondo is a easy fix … Powder coating jb weld or another high temp epoxy. Well unless doing clear.
I love your piece! I do several garage signs for people I don’t advertise many due to having brand badges on them. Don’t wanna open a letter from a lawyer.
Been waiting on a coworker to gimme dat cheddah so I could cut these for him (1/4" hot rolled mild). However, I burned through 2 sets of consumables to get all 8 (10 pierces ea). I really gotta get this houston air better suited for this machine…
All done
and now they’re in an acid bath to derust/millscale
I wonder if going too close to the edge on the cut might be hurting your consumables. You can see the outer edge is warped. It might reduce power at that point.
