Been awhile since I’ve posted here.

I’m coming here to seek the “best” route to disassemble and reassemble my Z axis assembly.

Should I remove the adjustable eccentric bearings to remove the mount from the assembly, or remove the set screws holding the guide rods and take things apart that way?

The assembly is super simple, and I’m mechanically inclined, just asking in case one method is better than the other.

I’ll be placing it inside a zip lock bag so I capture my spring.

If you’re wondering “why am I doing this?”

I reached out to support to request a parts invoice for any parts needed to rebuild my “z axis assembly”. It was sort of sticking, and no it’s not a lead screw issue or coupler. So they opted to send a new one.

Problem is, the plastic tab holding the IHS spring broke. I got the “go ahead” yesterday to disassemble it and swap parts over as needed.

Support is and always has been crazy helpful.

They’re also sending a replacement, and not leaving me stuck with a broken one. Huge credit to Johnny for going above and beyond to help rectify this ordeal.

I even reached back to offer to cover shipping or any other costs and he said “they got it”.

Here is the guide from Langmuir:
z-axis disassembly IHS Contact Switch Components Swap Guide.pdf (7.1 MB)

Here is what I did:

I would follow the guide and remove the rods, then you have complete access.

Thank you for that.

My Google-Fu failed me because I looked up “z axis assembly” on Friday and never got a hit on that PDF at all, even when adding the forum to my search.

I searched in anticipation of being told to “cannibalize the new assembly”, but waited until I got an email reply before moving forward in the event that Langmuir wanted me to send the broken one back.

I actually added the “z-axis disassemby” to that file so that I could find it on my hard-drive. Not your fault.

Disregard

7/64" vs 5/64" is used on the coupler

Shenanigans

The broken part from the new assembly; removing the fully intact piece from my old assembly.

I’ve rebuilt a lot of vehicle parts, and one thing about manual hubs is you’ve got a ball and detent spring on many hub dials.

Anytime I would disassemble them, I placed them in a zip lock bag before taking them apart. Doing this for my Z axis assembly helped me to catch my spring.

Just blows my mind how so many people lose this spring, but then again I can’t assume others have experience taking shit apart either.

That was not shenanigans, that was an organ transplant.

Autopsy is complete disassembly to see how it works and all the parts.

Shenanigans is mix and match random unrelated things from your shop to make it work.

Was super quick and simple.

Installed.

If only I had a mill, or the know-how really. I’d love to make my own Z axis assembly using a different method for coupling the assembly to the lead screw. Not to mention incorporating linear guide rails and a sort of limit switch for activating IHS.

The old setup.

I noticed some crud in this threaded part.

A tiny bit of it looked like plastic as if the threads were slightly stripped.

I made it a point to never crash my Z axis, or any axis for that matter as I just cringe whenever I see/hear others do it.

So I was surprised to see it like that on my own setup.

Put a flat on the lead screw and drill and tap the coupler for a set screw to bite down on flat.

The smart me would’ve done that.

I never went to college so I skipped doing that

Shoot, I may just have to do that later.

3d print your own part.

I don’t have a 3D printer!

Don’t want one really even though it’d be cool to have.

You’ll come around.

Looks like they’ve changed this assembly since the beginning.

I had a similar problem back in March of 2021 with my z-axis assembly.

Back then though that piece was copper. I beat it back into place silver soldered it up and waited for my replacement from Langmuir .

Oh it’s not that I don’t want one. I just don’t really have the space.

It can’t go in my garage, since it’d get metal dust all over it (I’m a fabricator). Not to mention real-estate in the garage is better spent on other things.

In the house we’ve got a 1 year old, and we keep the extra bedroom available for guests.

I noticed that in the PDF @ChelanJim provided!

Mine’s plastic hence why it was broken; well not why it was broken, but the reason why it was possible for it to break.

I did talk with them at Langmuir (via chat on the forum). I discussed the various documents and how it would be nice if their documents were all in the support section of the main website.

Turns out, that is their plan. They are going through all of the documents and revising those that need to be updated. It will happen…timing is unknown.

I would like to see documents that discuss these various topics all in that section:

  1. Cutting issues and how to correct. Troubleshooting guides.
  2. Wiring of the more commonly used plasma cutters. There is a topic that is pinned to the forum. It is good but it only has a few cutters included.
  3. Repairs, such as this one that Kwikfab just did, for all of the machines that they sell.
  4. Pros/cons of various additives for the water bed.
  5. More extensive parts list that details things like what the output/input of the power supply, connector name and size, and so on.

There are other topics but they escape me at this moment.
I am sure the owners of the Titan Press and the Mill might have other documents that they might like housed in the new “Langmuir Library of Documents.”

P.S. They mentioned that they are waiting on Tin to release these documents to them.
