I’m digging the new ad I just saw on Instagram…

Will there be any more software updates for the MR-1 this year?

So there is always this option. I keep inching closer and closer to this. Acorn CNC Controller Kit For Milling Machines, Routers, Lathes, Plasma And Laser
Less than $400.00 and you can have all the features you want. My only fear is getting the spindle to work with this board and controller.

If I get all my other projects finished up I might give this a go.

At some point I will be going that route…I just don’t have the time now. But even but fixes in cu control would make my life significantly better.

yeah every now and again I have to reprogram my tool setter location. It just randomly forgets where it was.

When I have to run 100 parts and I have to click the yes I acknowledge the part has finished before I can hit the cycle start button for the next part. It ends up being hundreds of extra clicks when each of the 100 parts has 4 different tools… Not to mention the button is so dang small I miss it half the time and have to hit that area like 3 times. So now it’s 1 thousand extra touches to the screen. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh

I have completed my conversion of the MR-1 to an Acorn controller. With the WMPG, it is a game changer. The CHIPS probing utility is also very useful. I couldn’t be happier with the conversion. I have been working on getting my notes together. If you are interested, let me know and I can give you share the GitHub repository.

I pushed the speeds on the machine as well. It is only 150 IPM at the moment, but I am confident I could push it harder.

O heck yeah. I actually already have the Acorn board but was saving it for another project. If I had confidence I could hook it up without lots of down time I would for sure. It just shows a vfd for the spindle and not a servo. I know it can be done just now how it’s done.

@langmuir-jake where are these updates? Communication really is crucial for people to invest in your products, and I am just not seeing it. Am I missing something?

Did any of you see this (from 2023)?

Perhaps others caught it but I missed it. When was the last cut control software update? Was it before this acquisition? I guess I’m wondering if this had any impact on their development efforts.

Looks like May of 2024 was the last update, and it caused as many problems as it fixed.

well guys, it looks like one of us is going to have to offer an upgraded control box for the MR-1. So which one of you electrical geniuses is going to start selling us a centroid based upgrade kit?

Yeah, or a Masso setup, which is probably better suited to the plug-and-play clientele that LS markets to. The problem there is price, of course.

Id be willing to pay the money to have a little peace of mind that there will be some sort of software product support in the future. I never really cared that the updates were slow and spread out. Thats par for the course with small businesses. However, when the communication stops, thats usually a sign of the product line being shut down or poor financial health. I dont know enough about LS to say one way or another, but its enough to keep me from getting a Titan for the time being. Maybe they will restructure. Maybe they will take the time to answer a few of the questions their customers have about this stuff. Time will tell.

I 100% feel the same way on this. I’ve put the Titan in my shopping cart 50 times than I think this exact same thing. I can’t risk buying a product that will not be supported with continual improvements, upgrades and bug fixes. (unless it’s perfect right out the gate)

I haven’t seen anything from LS in the last 6 months that shows me they plan to continually mature any of their existing products.

Same, I just cant bring myself to pull the trigger on the Titan. Im sure its a great product, but I cant imagine being happy after getting one and then having the same scenario this thread covers repeat again.

I deal with hundreds of vendors as part of my duties at work. We deal with a bunch of life safety, utility and transportation equipment. Its a totally different world, but when the vendor doesnt answer product questions, we stop using them and spread the word to others pretty quickly. Thats because its a sign of whats to come and we cant be left holding the bag when no one answers.

Full disclosure here, though. I have nothing wrong with my MR-1 and no major issues with the current state of the software. My concern is purely that the Langmuir folks made statements about the product and now wont acknowledge or respond to any of it. They have been “@” mentioned a few times, too.

Id settle for a big middle finger from them, at least. Thats a sign of life. Lol.

yeah, I’m running the hell out of my MR-1 as is. I was just super hopeful that they would incorporate some of the user feedback and improve the operating experience. I’ve made a lot of mods myself and looks like I’ll have to continue to do so. I just don’t want to leave cut control behind just to have them upgrade it weeks later.

I would really like to see how the Acorn conversion was done. If you could share the information it would be much appreciated. Thanks

Here is a thread that goes over the broad details:

All of the original hardware could be used, but I opted for more powerful drivers while I was upgrading. I also wanted a contactor to make the machine a little safer. If my budget and cabinet were bigger, I would have put in more safety measures. The biggest lessons learned were:

  1. Don’t bother with the existing tool setter and probe. They do not play nice with a properly grounded machine - you WILL fry them eventually.
  2. The servo driver will need to be adjusted to be accurately drive the servo motor. If you need the settings, I can probably dig them up.
  3. The Langmuir cabinet is too small. Save yourself some trouble and just buy a new cabinet. I spent more time trying to get everything to fit than was necessary.
  4. The limit switch cable needs to be rewired to work with auto squaring. The existing takes too many inputs to work properly.
  5. Purchase the CHIPS probing add-in. The probing routines and work flow are a huge help.

Hey guys, just wanted to come out with some transparency as we have been keeping quiet when it comes to any sort of updates on CutControl. While I don’t have much news to share today, I’ll be able to give an actual release date for our newest update to CutControl 25.1.2 this Friday. This will be an open beta just like FireControl’s update back in January/February. This update will include some key bugfixes, such as the touch probe-work coordinate bug. As well as some visual improvements and manual data input, which has been a requested feature for some time. This update was delayed so much as our software team has been spread between both current and future products. While this update won’t be as big as you would expect given the time between updates, we will continue to maintain and update the product into the foreseeable future.

I agree this update has definitely been too long in the making. Myself and all the other techs have been checking in at least a few times a week but we didn’t want to make any further promises until we knew for sure that the update was right around the corner. That way we wouldn’t make things even worse.
I can say that we’re in a much better place we’ve been in the past with more organization in the company and better schedules to work on projects. Zach is absolutely right that our programming team is stretched pretty thin but we’ll be able handle smaller, more consistent updates in the future now.
Feel free to keep the ideas and suggestions coming since we want to make sure to give you all the most value with the time we have available. I know I have a few features at the top of my list that I’ll keep pushing for. Thank you all for your patience.
