V2 Touch Probe Upgrade

I just completed the upgrade to the touch probe using the instructions on the Langmuir site. For the most part the instructions are very good. One step that occurs later in the disassembly probably should be the first step , removing the set screws that adjust the probe to align with the spindle center. Following their instructions I encountered a little difficulty removing the prove top cover due to these set screws holding onto the top cover. Also there is s step to remove the PCB board from the old probe body. Why? The instructions state neither will be used with the new probe. I just left mine intact since the screws holding the PCB board refused my invitation to be freed.

I should get mine tomorrow. I downloaded 24.1.1, but
FedEx didn’t deliver the probe and rebuild kits. They showed up at the local FedEx at 5 am, but they decided that I didn’t need them till tomorrow.

John, looks like you have the same type of service that I usually have. At least they are consistent-ly bad!

Thanks for the feedback! We’ll update the instructions accordingly.

Is anyone else having trouble getting the LEDs to work? I have the probe working with the upgrade kit, but the LEDs no longer work after switching to the new design. They did work for me on the last one, but I’m not using a CutControl board so it’s possible that it is a wiring issue on my end.

the upgraded probe is working great for me. Having said this, if you’re not good with assembling super tiny parts it could be challenging for some people.

Also I think you need in large red letters a warning that says “ONCE YOU RELEASE YOUR RUNOUT ADJUSTMENT SCREWS THE COMPRESSION SPRING WILL FLY ACCROSS THE ROOM… GOOD LUCK FINDING IT…” haha. I almost lost an eye.

When the probe triggers, pin 2 (signal pin) is driven to logic low. The logic low signal is fed to an OR gate which then sends 5v to the LED circuit to light them up. This is different to how the original board worked. So either that logic gate no longer works (unlikely since we test them all here before shipping), or there is some pullup/pulldown weirdness on the input pin on your board which is allowing the trigger functionality to work but not the LED circuit.

If you would like to send us yours back we can test if for you.

Thanks Daniel, that’ll be enough for me to fix it. I have a pull up resistor added which is probably the root of my problem. I appreciate the info!

I just upgraded my two probes. Definitely save yourself the trouble of removing the old logic board. I stripped the bolts on the first probe then ended up getting them out with needle nose pliers… Then realized I didn’t need to remove them anyways. Second one was a breeze. Haven’t gotten to test them yet, but they feel drastically better with zero play in the stylus.

Lol…yeah, we need to update those instructions. The new socket head cap screws are so much better than the low heads to install though aren’t they?

Huge improvement!

If you do this upgrade & want to use you machine the same day double check the contents of the kit before starting!!

Mine was incorrectly packaged, they sent me (3) ball stud nuts, (2) ball studs, and (4) 4-40 SHCS.
The extra SHCS was threaded into the ball stud nut so that just shows me that LS still has a big issue with QC.

Now I’m sure support will send the ball stud I need, but that will still take several days to remedy…

Ouch! That can definitely be a headache.

@langmuir-daniel Its not a 1/2" wrench BTW it’s a 12mm.

Anyone know of where you can purchase a new stylus for these probes? I would hate to think you need to spend 150$ for a 5$ stylus?

I’ve bought compatible stylii off of Amazon.

This one works well:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FSS55DQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This one had an inconsistent ball size (I’m not convinced it is a perfect sphere) so I couldn’t get my desired accuracy out of it:

I haven’t used CutControl in a year, I don’t remember if you can adjust the diameter of the ball, but that would be required to use one of these.

Thanks TDough, how did you see that?? I don’t see it in the store nor in the machine ordering field.

@AlexW I don’t have that led either. Can you suggest what you might have done to repair? I am not sure that disassembling this thing and resetting it is worth the LED though.

I haven’t gotten the LED working. I tried a couple of things and gave up. I’m with you that I don’t want to take it apart again to debug the board itself. I do have a virtual LED on my machine’s control panel which is good enough for my debugging.

I’m also impressed that TDough found that. I looked for a spare stylus to order when I ordered my V2 probe upgrade kit and couldn’t find it.

Just finish the V2 upgrade and adjusted run out. Downloaded the software and plugged the probe in LEDs on all the time. Probe flashes on the bottom of cut control. If you trigger the probe LEDs on probe get brighter and the icon in cut control is on solid. Release probe and it starts flashing again.

Doesn’t seem like you are able to browse for it on the store but if you google Langmuir touch probe stylus it shows up. Same with the collet nut.
