Hey guys, I’m new here but have had my crossfire pro for awhile. Iv had my fair share of issues I’ve had to work through but have been able to do it on my own or reading on here, but iv came across a few issues I haven’t been able to figure out yet. So I have a crossfire pro with a hypertherm 45xp, laptop with charger not plugged in while running. The torch will fire and start cutting then the Z AXIS will travel up about an inch and just blow a line in the metal until machine shuts off, when this happens the green light in fire control for IHS is not coming on, only comes on during initial pierce. I have ran the THC fire control system test and it passes, I started to do the manual testing with a DMM this am and what I have found is the voltage on the barrel connector coming from the CPC plug to the VIM box is .2v for just a sec then goes to 0v while cutting, Thc control is turned off in fire control for this test. But I cannot test it at the plasma end because the torch will not fire do to the CPC having to be unplugged to test that.
I have been cutting with this thing for about a year I’ve never had this problem, the Z axis is free and not binding, I’m assuming it’s the cable going bad or the plasma itself, I did buy the hypertherm so I did not have these issues haha, thanks for any help you guys can provide.
Welcome to the forum!
Does the torch immediately move up an inch or is it in steps?
And you are certain that the IHS light does not come on while this is occurring?
What happens if you try a cut without THC turned on?
Have you tried setting THC to nominal voltage? What happens?
Have you tried to have FireControl generate a test line and just cut the metal? (This will be done without THC by design.) What happens?
The torch moves up in steps.
I am 100% certain the IHS light is off during the event.
I’ve been cutting with THC off because that’s the only way it will cut correctly.
I have not tried setting to nominal voltage.
I have not had fire control generate a test line, but I have made a test cut with THC manually turned off and it works, that’s how I’ve been having to cut.
Thanks for the reply.
That means the THC is likely “hunting”. I would submit a ticket with Langmuir and get their eyes on it. Perhaps the THC is malfunctioning.
Here would be a good topic to check while waiting for tech support:
This is the tech support contact page:

It could also be EMI that is interfering with the assessment of the voltage sensed by THC. Make sure the torch cable and work lead do not come near the THC cable (as best you can).
That trouble shooting link is the one I started when I realized my voltage was not what it was supposed to be, the numbers I posted in my first post were the numbers I had gotten. But thank you very much, I guess I’ll be getting ahold of Langmuir
I suspected that. I just wanted to cover the bases, just in case.
Others may give more ideas, and I hope they do.
In any case, please consider reporting back as you resolve the problem.
What does firecontrol say your live voltage is while cutting?
Will do! Thanks again!

What does firecontrol say your live voltage is while cutting?
126 volts.
Hmm, typically we’d see a very low live voltage number if the torch keeps rising. Are you using smart voltage? What are you cutting?
What consumables are you using?
If IHS is cycling and touching the metal then piercing and lowering to cut, it’s working. It’s separate from THC.
I’m using smart voltage. 12 gauge mild steel.
I’m using 45a HT220941, 54623ee hypertherm.
Can you post a video of what firecontrol is doing during the failed cuts?
You say it passes the THC test, but do you ever see any voltage in firecontrol at rest?
You’re using hypertherm brand consumables right?
What did you change? Move anything, rearrange any cables?
What’s the 54623?

I will put a video on you tube and post a link tomorrow.
I have not seen any voltage at rest.
All I use are hypertherm brand consumables.
I have not changed anything.
I may have found the problem, I have made multiple cuts here recently with THC on and they have been great. I want to do some more cuts tomorrow to verify it’s fixed. If it is I will post what I have found.

What’s the 54623?
That just the second part number on the product, I just posted every number on it.
