Cutting 10ga mild steel with a hypertherm 45 XP. The problem I’m having is I’m getting a bevel that looks like this… \ /. . From doing some searching here it seems that a bevel that looks like that is from the torch cutting too high. I thought maybe this had something to do with the torch height control keeping the head too high during the cut. So instead of using smart voltage I set the voltage to 128 volts which is what the manual recommends. What I noticed however when watching it cut is that even though the nominal voltage is set to 128 the live voltage indicates that it’s maintaining 158 volts throughout the cut. What I don’t understand is why it’s maintaining 158 volts instead of the 128 volts I set. I’m also unsure if cutting at that higher voltage would result in the torch being higher than it should be or lower than it should be.
I did run the THC test when I set up the machine and it passed.
triple check your cut charts to make sure your information is correct. It is easy sometimes to accidentally use the production voltage instead of best quality settings voltage in the charts. Most the Hypertherm charts list production quality and best quality separate but in the same chart so it’s easy to get them mixed up sometimes. Consumable quality also plays a huge role in the voltage so I only use the cut chart voltage on new or mostly new consumables and then I’ll either adjust my nominal voltage or switch over to smart voltage ehrn they become more worn.
I did indeed double check my voltage. 128 is what the book says for 10 ga, mild steel, regular consumables. Consumables are brand new. Odd it would maintain 158 vs the set 128.
That is just the thing…I don’t think he is in “Nominal Voltage” if a different voltage is being shown. I am just trying to open all the cupboard doors to make sure. Whether using nominal or smart, the bevel should be able to be corrected…so something else is going on.
I do admit it might be a distraction at this point.
That is indeed where I’m setting it and saving it in fire control. Not in fusion. Unfortunately I’m leaving town for a couple of days but will try to screen record when I get back and can try it again.
