BOSS MFG Magnetic Breakaway

I purchased one of BOSS Manufacturing’s plasma protection systems magnetic breakaway torch machine holders. Very impressed with it. I had to modify it a little to fit the THC. The two holes that almost line up with The THC are threaded 10-32 threaded holes. I had to drill out to 1/4 and slot them a tiny bit to the inside. Also enlarged and deepened the area for a 1/4-20 allen head fastener. It has a spot for a breakaway switch machined in it. That was a $100 option. I found my own micro switch to use. I’ll pot it in there myself, saving $80.

That looks pretty good

Look great. What model number did you buy?

How is the microswitch works with LS software?

Thank you for sharing.

Uh oh. Looks like Goheen’s gonna have to add a torch kill switch to his next version!
But seriously, this is a very nice looking mount!

this is one serious mount…but I have been running my table for over a year now…and have not had one instance where the use of something like this was needed.

to me seems like a lot of work, time and money.

if this is breakaway is triggered you are going to spend a whole bunch of time resetting the position of the torch…lining up the cuts…resetting the program…
I would rather spend a little time watching over the table where I know tip-ups mught happen and save all the other aggravation.

those are just my thoughts on this…

Any update on the user-friendly aspect?
What is your take since you have used it for quite some time?

I emailed the seller asking some questions, but no response from them.

I got this quote for their website

“We use rare earth magnets on both the mount for the riser and the torch mount plate. Utilizing the magnets this way makes the two halves self-aligning. It’s a far better design overall!

It has proven to be a better design than a breakaway that uses magnets on only one side of the breakaway and some kind of metal plate and alignment pin system on the other.”

I really like it. It’s broke away twice not from tip ups, but from some slag that was spit out and in the path of a cut. I was cutting 3/8" plate and one of the pierce’s deposited some slag on top of plate. It does push the torch out further from the THC by about a 1/2" from it’s normal location. It doesn’t extended pass the water tray but it’s close to the edge. I took some High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) (1/2" thick kitchen cutting board basically) and cut 2 square horseshoe shaped pieces too slide over rails for bearings to bump against and keep torch back from edge of pan. If I had thought about it before I screwed pan down I would have shifted it forward to offset what the mount moved the torch.

As far as having to realign torch, you don’t have to. The way it’s made it attach back aligned exactly were it was before break away. Lining up cuts and resetting program would happen with or without breakaway.
