Art Metal Sculpture Commissions

We have been commissioned by an artist to make 3 metal sculptures.

These projects have some pretty interesting forms.

Here are some pictures of some of the mock ups and instructions were given for the project.

Let’s start with the first piece called “Fortitude”

from this maquette and instructions recreated them in Fusion

7 feet tall

we have all the materials in stock and we are gonna start fabricating these over the next few weeks.

The second sculpture is called “Shape Shift”

these this model was harder with the two truncated cone sections but I think we managed to capture the intent.

The two large curves are made from stainless steel

The third sculpture is called “Climb”

climb is 4 feet tall.

These projects will be challenging but I look forward to working on and completing these three sculptures.

That is amazing how you put that into Fusion! Great adaptation from the drawings.

I had to snicker when I zoomed up on the mock-up and saw the cardboard :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

I am sure you have much better ideas of what to use for the materials but I kind of like the use of rebar with the rustic nature and the ridges. Of course that may not fit in the artist’s intended direction with this piece:

Like Jim said, really cool how you took those from concept to image. Gives the client a great decision making tool.

Projects one through three, respectively, I see a sailboard, a helicopter with a fish for a pilot, and a ladder after a tornado. Could these impressions reveal anything about my personality, or lack of refinement…

That’s perfect. Art gets the mind and imagination racing.

Thank you. Some aspects were a challenge to model in fusion. But persevered through and learned a few new tricks and techniques along the way.

So you know the “class” is always ready, willing and interested in learning…hint…hint…

Made some progress yesterday and today on “shapeshift” had some other hvac-related things I had to take care of as well but some progress is better than nothing.

My partner did a good job of assembly.

These are all quarter inch parts. The pipe is two and a half inch shd40.

The flats are ready to be cut for the stainless components of “shapeshift”. I still have a part sheet of quarter inch plate on the table so I want to cut some pieces from “fortitude” first. trying to keep moving material around to a minimum.

great looking projects.

Looks like you are ready for a bigger shop Tin, running out of room…

We definitely need more space. Right now we actually have the operation spread over two different shops that both are quite crowded .

Have been fantasizing about a bigger building but with the way things are right now we are priced out for the time being.

Here are some photos of the base of “shapeshift” and its current state without a ton of clutter around it.

These are going to end up getting sent out for black powder coat. A little bigger than we can do in house. Currently are powder coating setup can do the size of a 30-in cylinder 30 in tall. We use a digital programmable pottery kiln. I can see us buying a large version of the Vulcan when and if it is ever available.

A little more progress today I cut the stainless parts for “shape shift” and the quarter inch plate pieces for “fortitude” . May business partner welded and dressed out welded and dressed out shape shifts quarter inch pieces “shape shift” quarter inch pieces.

would have liked to get at this sooner but I ended up getting COVID and it really took the wind out of my sails. Just starting to get back into the swing of things. One of the main reasons I’ve been so active over the last week here’ cause I’ve been laying around the house sick as hell, feeling sorry for myself. On the mend now.

I made it until beginning of Oct without ever getting Covid. My Moms in a nursing home since mid Sept and I go there everyday. Go figure I’d come down with Covid. She did too. Were both recovered. Took us both almost two weeks.

That welding clip looks like an underwater shot with the hood and the smoke rising so slowly.

I’m happy to hear that you guys recovered well. I couldn’t believe how sick I was.

Glad all of you are better. Being sick is really aggravating.

Women nurses (that I worked with) liked to say that men can’t take pain as well as women. I always pointed out that we are angry about being kept from doing things more than being affected by the pain. We are just not very patient.

My business partner has started assembling “fortitude”.

I did make the slots too wide but he managed to make it work.

Now I need to cut all the 14 gauge parts.

You know I love this. Good commission and nice work.

We were able to spend a little bit more time on our sculpture commissions today.

I’ve had a heck of a work week already. Times are busy and I’ve been having to put in the hours. Saturday Sunday Monday Tuesday, I work from dark to dark doing HVAC installation. Clocked 42 and 1/2 hours of actual work on the tools in those four days. But today I scheduled these art commissions or else they’re not going to get done.

Here’s a few pics of what happened today.

We did some final forming an assembly of “shapeshift” and cut some more pieces for “fortitude”

And the twisted sheet metal forms fit quite nicely

A real world example of what we’ve been discussing at this topic about twisted sheet metal forms. It seems our methodology is close.

Hopefully my business partner will send along some pictures. His camera is better and he usually composes pictures better than I do. I’ll post some more if he does.

my business partner got back to me with some photos he took.

So enjoy another photo dump.

Shapeshift is ready for textured black powder coating. And one of the stainless hoops is going to get heat treated to Blue. The rock also needs to be acrylic sealed
