Z-Axis "Hop" / Zig-Zag Cuts

Getting a “hop” in the Z-axis of my CrossFire Pro, which is causing significant zig-zag patterns in my cuts.

I have already performed extensive maintenance and part replacements to resolve this, including:

  • Part Replacements: Replaced the bearing at the bottom shaft of the Z-axis and installed a new Z-axis coupler.

  • Cleaning & Lube: The entire machine and all rails have been deep-cleaned and lubricated.

  • Mechanical Check: I have verified that the wheels riding the Z-axis rails are moving freely and are not binding.

Despite these efforts, the Z-axis continues to “hop” during operation.

I’m assuming the Hop is only happening while running THC programs.

If you’re running a straight lowering program with the THC on in fireControl is the voltage staying relatively stable or is it moving up and down and the THC mechanism is hunting up and down to reach its Target?

try hooking the Z motor up to one of the other axis and test again. is the plastic nut the is attached to the slot in the back grabbing ? running it horizontal without a torch may cause some play because the weight the torch holds the contacts closed.

Can’t watch your video w/o permissions.

Is this like a sawing motion? Slow rise then drop down? I’ve had it before, I can’t remember the exact cause. Like @TinWhisperer said, try running w/o the THC turned on. If it works OK, then see below.

EMI issues with the THC. Grounding issues with your table, Torch cable or work clamp cable in coils or too close to the USB cable, Laptop charging plugged in while cutting, USB cable, or the USB port on the Crossfire control box.

Live voltage numbers will explain this.
