Yay, it's New Tool Day!

I’m sure the weather seals are good, but I was talking about the outside of the cable being wetted. If it’s hanging off a 1600V source, then I certainly wouldn’t want to grab the bottom of that cable without some kind of discharge connection!

You make a great point I hadn’t considered. Fortunately, the 1600V in the box is floating with no external ground reference. Better safe than sorry or dead.

While cleaning up my office today I ran across an original product box and manual for Wrapid. So… just for grins and completeness, here ya go:

What is it? I’ve never heard of or seen it.

It’s your favorite kind of thing! A Post Processor! You create your design in an Electronic CAD program, submit the design to the post processor, choosing one of the many Wire Wrap panels that Augat or other companies sold, the post processor would assist you in placing your components on the panel and then you press the magic button and out comes a file ready to be sent to the Wire Wrap fab house. The fab house would wire the board and ship you the finished product! The package even included a COM program configured to auto dial the fab house and upload the file!

Easy Peasy! It’s unlikely you’ll be able to use it at this point since it was introduced and used in the early 80’s… :slightly_smiling_face:

Now I know. I love trivia. I love the 80s

Speaking of new tool day. How about an update on that laser welder/ cleaner? I have been looking at the same one. They also have a cheaper version. We are waiting patiently

I am chopping at the bit. But Mrs BigDaddy2166 said to take your time.

I do have a new tool to show. Bought a old wire wrap gun at an auction about 15 yrs ago, never used it because it’s missing the spinner thingy. Turns out you can still buy them new from Jonard. I didn’t do that though, I found what I needed on eBay for about half the price. Even then having the pieces triples the value of the gun.

@Sticks @Bigdaddy2166 OK, on to my 2000W laser welder, cutter and cleaner. Here’s my update. In the past 2 months, I finally installed a design I’ve been on and off for about 7 years in a Dallas semi-conductor fab, planned a 60th surprise birthday party for a high school friend, had a hernia operation, a medical procedure done on my foot, had an MRI on my lower back, lost my 15 yr old border collie and found a 5 mo old blue merle Australian shepherd puppy.

My shop time has been basically zero. On to the laser…

We have the laser gun mounted in a ABB IRF 6-axis robot arm. Rob has figured out the convoluted process from Fusion to IRF control language so we can cut metal.

The cut is almost perfect. Kerf width is about 10mil wide and very straight, ie 90 angles from surface. 1/4in CRS is easy, aluminum, SS same results except ventilation is a must with AL. We wear respirators. I said almost perfect. The back side dross is not easy to remove.

For plasma cuts, I just whack the dross off with an angle grinder/wire wheel. Laser dross has to be ground off. The kerf width is so narrow that this dross often bridges the gap and making the part hard to remove from the cut particularly on thicker stock.

We first thought it was the shielding gas, so I bought a nitrogen tank and another regulator. No change. I went by the local metal yard and asked what they use on their 6KW laser. Just compressed air at 300 PSI. Our compressor is set at 125. So we needed to kick up the PSI to blast the metal out of the 10mil cut slot. I bought another high-pressure regulator for my nitrogen tank. The laser’s gun, the SUP23T, max pressure is 200 PSI. The controller’s cheap electical valve is probably 150 PSI. Nonetheless, we cranked up the pressure and cut more coupons. The dross above is from 225PSI nitrogen. Above that, the controller’s valve won’t open.

As for welding SS and AL, we haven’t tried this because we didn’t have the correct shielding gas until now. Aluminum (high reflectivity) requires argon, and other materials recommend nitrogen. Flow is about 15L/min. I’ll be trying these soon.

I’m limited to lifting less than 10lbs for another month or so. Which requires help around the shop.

Thanks for the update. Sorry, you have had a hard time. I didn’t know  We all hope you are feeling better. Go put on some head phones and put on some Iron Butterfly  I’m also sorry about your dog. They are better than people. The new pup looks ready to go.

Levi is doing great!

His first deer sighting.

His first porcupine sighting.

Poor Levi. I had a Black and Tan Coonhound that hated cats. Well, a porcupine looks like a cat somewhat until you piss it off. I have an identical picture somewhere.

So sorry to hear about the medical issues. That back issue is not going to just rub out with car wax.

What an inquisitive dog with the porcupine. Done that…probably won’t DO again. Hopefully!

got my fingers crossed.

I need one of these when I hit the scrap yard for ‘supplies’.

Waited for this killer sale.

Might need to get one of these also.

We had a dog that kept encountering skunks. We would be walking in the dark and he would always stay within 30 feet of us. We would hear him move suddenly and after the first one we would roll our eyes and wait to see if we start smelling skunk. Yep.

By the fourth and fifth time, instead of getting sprayed in the neck, he was getting hit on the back hip. He obviously realize what it was and quickly turned to get away. No more after the fifth time.

You needed a reason??? Who are you fooling?

I used to walk my 3 dogs at night as well, on a leash. Got hit at least four times. Once in the driveway at the start of the walk. It was point blank, got me too. I just turned around, walked up to our trash can and threw away everything I was wearing, including my shoes.

Another time, my dumb sweetheart dog pulled out of her collar and followed one through a 2ft culvert under a road. She was covered head to tail with skunk oil. This was worst hit ever!

We now always walk at night with one of these.
