Which brand small ER20 collets?

General questions for all:
What is the smallest dia tool that you are using?
And what brand are you using for the small ones? The smallest one I see in the Langmuir ER20 set is 1/16".

How are people finding the Langmuir collets? Up to spec?

I saw a post from @microarms about running a 2 flute 1/32" in the MR-1 Tool Library post, but did not want to sidetrack that discussion.

Most all end mills that small would have a larger shank.

The collets that came with the machine are higher quality than the Chinese brands from Amazon, but that’s not hard to beat. lol But they look really nice, anyway.

Nearly all my small tools have 1/8" shank. I’m running these in 1/8" and 1/16": https://a.co/d/bfwrEUg

I checked run out the other day on the 1/8" on the MR-1, with a .0005" indicator, and found no perceptible deflection. Kudos to both manufacturers.

I use drill bits down to .028 (will likely go smaller in the future) and they run flawlessly.

Thanks for the posts.
I have been leaning towards the Techniks too. Their set is 12 pieces, and I believe the smallest one in the set is 5/32.

Very good to know. I have not seen the smaller drill bits in larger shank sizes; perhaps I have not been looking in the right places.

I’m using carbide drills for circuit boards, resharps from eBay mostly. I know Harvey tool has some 1/8" shank micro drills too (down to 0.002" :flushed:), but they are way more spendy, and so far accuracy has been great with the carbide drills.

Thanks again for the info. :grinning:

I got the langmuir ones, and then got a set of metric accusize collets which also seem nice, with a decent box. Havent put an indicator on them yet tho.

Cautionary tale about cheap collets. You get what you pay for.

Techniks is good. American based company but I’d be surprised if they were actually made in the US.
Also see Tegara sold by Shars.

Another ToT fan
Its good to see that Shars is carrying some quality stuff. The stuff made in Taiwan seems to be of good quality. I have a manual lathe that is made in Taiwan, and it has been very smooth and stable over 5 years of use.

I have techniks ER32 collets for use in collet blocks. They seem well made. My only grip with them is that the engraving is a very light color and difficult to see.

I received a technics ER20 nut and 1/2" ER20 collet a few days ago but haven’t yet tested it for runout.

Techniks and Langmuir ER20 1/2" collets and collet nuts. I haven’t yet checked the runout on either.

Looks good. Do please keep us updated with how they stand up to usage in your machine!

Having only looked at the technik ER20 I can say a few things.

The markings in the techniks are difficult to see, as I expected from their ER32s.

The metal gauge is obviously thinner and they seem more compliant when squeezed by hand. I don’t know if that is good or bad. I suspect the technik would have more clamping range.

The interior surface finish, purely by eye, seems to be a lower RA on the technik but this is comparing a slightly used collet to one fresh out of the box.

I was able to clamp .031" shank with my .062" technik collet without issue, and without too much effort (likely due to the thinner steel), it ran true and it seemed to spring back to size afterward…don’t know what it would do over time.

But I found a better tool, so won’t be needing to hit .031" any more, either.

I got the iCarbide set off of Amazon. Seeming good so far, I’ve only used the 3/8 and 1/8.
