Hey ya’ll,

We posted a new video using the updated Touch Probe, check it out!

Looks like the ruby still get drug across the surface after the fine touch. Is that a change that needs to be made in CC?

I’m going to assume that the position is calculated at the moment of contact during the X or Y axis move, before the Z axis retract. So I’m not under the impression that it would affect accuracy of the offset. However it would be nice to see the probe retract in X or Y before Z. Some of the cast and saw cut material I run can be pretty rough. I’d prefer not to drag the tip up the side of a piece of rough cut material and potentially damage the ball.

@Dre My probe has never done that. It raises up after the last touch. I imagine it is in the settings. I will have to look on Monday.

Just for clarification my probe raises in Z after the probe touch off, but in when probing in the X or Y direction the probe raises up in Z while still making contact on the side of the part. Not a big deal on smooth material, but some rougher saw cuts make me cringe a little.
At this point I have a few “set” work coordinates for whatever I’m working with. G54 and G55 are the vise, G56 is the spoil board for flat thin materials, G57 is my 6" 3 jaw chuck on the table. All of that to say I don’t probe very often these days.

It takes 10’s of thousands of cycles to wear a ruby. I ran cmm for 12 years on cast titanium, millions of points measured and never wore out a tip, they got damaged by operators first.

But I still don’t like to see it dragging on the surface either.

Oh yeah, I’m not worried about wear on the ruby. I’ve got a few hundred hours on CMMs and the like. My worry is the very rough saw cuts causing the ruby to bounce off of the surface and chipping it. We’ve replaced a few ruby tips over the years on our Zeiss from measuring rough castings and serrated finishes.

Is it a real ruby? Based on the price of the stylus I assumed it was something cheaper.

I agree with you that most probing routines on other CNC systems would back off from the object before retracting Z. It would be nice if CutControl had these routines as user customizable.
