In the middle of a finishing pass my spindle stopped and wouldnt turn back on. After letting it cool down it would turn back but was very loud. I let the spindle run at 8000rpm with no cutting and it did it again after about a minute. Seems to be getting hot and loking up. Any thoughts?
Take off the outside cover and check the belt tension. If you loosen it up you can tell if its the motor or the spindle.
It seems to be the spindle. The motor feels like a motor should but the spindle feels pretty rough
Email Langmuir and get one coming. The spindle has super high precision type bearings. Very unusual problem.
Dumb question….did you follow their spindle break-in procedure?
The spindle doesn’t have expensive name brand bearings. They use sealed 15 degree angular contact bearings marked P5 for ABEC 5 tolerance. I’d consider them semi high precision.
Not a dumb question. Yes i did run spindle break in. Thanks for the info. I took the spindle apart and found one of the lower bearings to be bad. Maybe just a fluke.
What was the part number on the bearing? It would be great to know if its just a standard or a high precision type.
Just curious
7007C-2RZ/P5DBM. So not super precision but high end middle
Thank you. Very interesting…
I wonder if some high end precision bearings would be a improvement ?
Big money I would think?
I was wondering the same thing but the price jumps significantly from p5 up. Also i think the applications get very narrow for high precision bearings i.e. temps and speeds are crucial to make them operate correctly. Hopefully Langmuir will just send me a new spindle housing already assembled.
I would hope so. I checked those bearings out on google. $250 per set unless you get them from china. Probably where they are made anyway.
Anyway, I’m sure they will send you an assembly real fast.
Might be made in Switzerland - they make some crazy precise bearings (probably from their watchmaking background).
Looking at other bearings it looks like max operating temp is 120C for some higher end pieces, i dont think ive ever seen my spindle more than 160ish but would be interesting to know what temps people are actually running at.
I had this issue when I first got my MR1 and durring the last 10 minutes of the spindle break in procedure, my spindle locked up and wouldnt spin until it cooled. It also got to about 90deg C. I emailed Langmuir and they sent me a replacement spindle in less than a week.
I have to say I do really like Langmuirs customer support. Im definitely going to buy another Langmuir product when I get some spare cash (thinking I want a plastma table)
Glad to hear im not the only one. They do have very good customer support. The new one is on the way no questions asked.
If anyone’s wondering what the part numbers mean. 7007C-2RZ/P5DBM
7007 Angular Contact 35x62x14mm
C 15° Contact Angle
2RZ Seals on both sides of the bearing
P5 ABEC-5 tolerance
DB Back-to-Back arrangement
M Medium Preload
I’ve seen 7007C bearing prices range from a few dollars to thousands.
Has anyone found our spindle anywhere. I asked if i could buy one as a spare and at this time we cant from langmuir.
It looks like the spindle and spindle block are custom pieces. They dont look very complex, a good machine shop could replicate them pretty easy
Mine just locked up 3 minutes into my first test run today. Same story, spindle is hot as hell, won’t turn back on, and pretty crunchy when you move it by hand.
Yes I ran the break-in procedure. Guess I get to tram it again…
Langmuir took care of me with no problems. I believe they had some bad bearings in the mix. I had them send me an assembled spindle block. That way i didnt have to worry about it being put together wrong just had to bolt in on. When i ran the spindle break in with the first spindle it was kinda noisy. The new spindle definitely sounded better and so far no problems with 50 or more run time hours. Its a big bummer but they will take of you.
