Spacers for X Axis Beam

Has anyone here added spacers to their machine to raise their work envelope up? I dont have a dire need for it yet, but its something Ive been considering. Especially if a 4th axis kit comes out in the future. It seems like the top of the Y axis carriages would be a good place for it. Take two chunks of steel, drill 4 holes, grind the faces parallel and throw the spacers in. Am i missing something? Any reason not to?

I’ve entertained making a pair of 1 inch spacers for my machine but haven’t tackled it yet. Been running a lot of low profile plastic parts lately so I haven’t needed the extra room. I did have a shaft to mill the end of that just barely cleared the carriage last year that got me thinking about it pretty seriously though.
I don’t think there would be a lot of loss in rigidity as long as it wasn’t too tall and buttoned up nicely. Of course, if you tossed something like a 3 inch spacer in there I’d be a little more worried about flex.
