Anybody have any luck with picking at scrapyards for items to plasma cut?
I have been finding some decent metal and it is usually 3/16 - 1/4" range.
I buy a lot of new steel but I like cheap steel also.
A scrap yard is located right behind my shop and I commonly fly my drone overhead looking for good scrap. I tried buying scrap from the office and they have no interest selling any of it so I started talking to employees through the fence behind my shop and told them what type of stuff I can use and now they put whatever good scrap they find over my fence and I give them a few bucks for it. They also take in cars at this location to crush and if there is a car with easy to get parts I can use I hit up the employees to get it for me. I have got some good metal from them especially from the bins they drop off at manufacturing and machine shops. One of the places that uses the bins always has piles of 10g and 16g steel sheet and they are always triangular shapes 2 feet wide and 3 feet long, I have a stack of about 200 pieces like that perfectly clean flat metal.
Conspiracy and embezzlement. Lol.
Back in the day we made I don’t know how many beehive lids out of water heater skins from the scrap yard.
when I bring our material in to the scrap yard I always go digging around. Found a perfectly good old school rototiller last time I wasn’t going to take it but I fired it up right there and it ran good so I couldn’t leave it.
I’ve been having luck cutting sea turtles out of plow discs… they turn out nice. Some of the discs are a little too steep for thc to keep up or probably just my settings not sure.
