Question about Z axis alignment and mill bit touch off pattern

Hello, I am at the Z axis alignment step in my new build. It seems that with initial shims installed per the Langmuir build instruction worksheet, the touch off pattern looks like a smiley face with the “forward half” of the circle presenting first. If I change shims to improve touch off pattern towards a full circle, The 3-2-1 block touch indicator results get worse. Is the first touch pattern supposed to be a full circle if optimally aligned?

Anything prior to machining the plate really doesn’t mean much. You’re going to readjust after surfacing, so just follow the steps, and you’ll get there.
