No G53 in Fusion 360 post process

FWIW, I ‘think’ I’ve discovered that the MR-1 post processor for F360 does not support G53. If you select G53 as your safe retract, it gets set to G28 in the post. Obviously, if you select G28, then it stays G28.

This is annoying because G28 sends you spindle all the way up to Z0 before starting the fist op. I don’t want the spindle to rise to Z0. I want it to rise, for example, 0.1 inches. As I understand it, G28 doesn’t an incremental rise… it’s Z0 or nothing. You can set an increment, but that gets interpreted as just a stop along the way to Z0.

I’ve considered modifying the .cps file, but I just don’t have the time to dive into that right now. I’ve seen a couple folks make improvements to the .cps file to accommodate stuff like G53, but I’m hesitant to use a processor that I’m potentially gonna need to debug. Their work looks pretty darn impressive but not necessarily at a production release state yet.

Any thoughts? Is there are widely tested alternative .cps file out there that I just haven’t found?

This is what i use in fusion 360, assuming im following you correctly.

Thanks for that. I think there are a couple of ways to drive the z-up-first behavior in an individual post file, but I’d like to have it be a default that just always happens.

I’ve had similar issues and when running first ops, I sometimes need the spindle to Z up for clearance before moving to XY 0. Had a few crashes in the past because of this!

The way I work around this now is by setting up a “fake” first op in fusion 360. For example, I make a cube and move it to a safe area away from the part. The cube is positioned where I want Z height to go. Then I run a very quick op on that fake part. Hope that makes sense.
