MR1 Drain upgrade / Mod

My son and I will be milling some steel shortly, and I want to upgrade the drain. I have seen several suggestions, I am leaning toward a single kitchen type drain mounted in the rear of the machine. Does anybody have a specific drain they used or recommend? I am thinking of using a large core drill to set the drain into, then a small core drill to go through to the bottom of the pan. Then use a threaded nipple and a nut to tighten it all down, after I put RTV under the drain.

Sound good? What size drain is recommended?

Thanks!

I fabricated a 4” cup out of aluminum conduit. Welded an aluminum 3/4 bung hole on the bottom.

I then got a brass through-hull with two nuts and rubber washers, cut off the large end, and screwed

Put it at the bottom. 4” coring bit and patiently cut through. The bit I picked was 1/4 larger than my fabricated drain. Then, I used an epoxy concrete patch in a tube to pump it into the area around the drain. Left about 1/2 to the surface to fill with the leftover gray two-part epoxy that Langmuir sends with the table.

It’s been almost 4 years now without a coolant backup. It drains like a toilet. Hook a 3/4 hose to the bottom, and it will drain right back into the coolant sump. Good luck.

Looks great! I dont want to fabricate a drain, I was thinking of a kitchen drain from Home Depot. I still need to research a little, but I would like to screw a nipple on the bottom of it, and cinch it down with a large conduit nut or something like that. So I want a nice, smooth cut down about 2” or so, then go to like 1 1/2” from there out the bottom. Thoughts?

The machine is an open canvas for you. As long as you seal it well, you will be ok. That spot is a great place for the drain if you use coolant. My machine was the first unit and a kind of test project. They have since moved the drains to the sides of the plate.
