Minimum Quantity Lubrication

Has anyone had experience with MQL instead of flood coolant either with the MR-1 or on a large machine? Just watched a video on Haas website that makes it look like it would be a lot less messy and easier to clean up.

Here’s my limited perspective: we use a mist / spray coolant system on the Datron M8. It works well enough for aluminum in most cases, although I’ve found it lacking for thread milling and boring with small tools where the coolant just can’t make it into the hole. Sometimes I’ll turn off coolant for those operations and manually squirt some tap magic into the bore

They run ethanol (or isopropanol) as the coolant. You can also run Acculube 4600 in those systems for ferrous milling due to the low viscosity, which is what Datron recommends now.

I appreciate that there’s no residue or wash down cycle with alcohol coolant. It does seem to limit you to light cuts.
