My dad made these magnetic pickup tools for the shop. We used it today to clean up the bottom of the water table. It works so good I thought I’d post a picture. Magnet is mounted to dowel and when lifted up all the metal drops off end.

I put a 1in diameter countersunk magnet on the end of a wooden dowel. cost 2 dollars. works amazing.
We figured we have about $8 in our setup, and yes agreed they do work amazing.
I made one of those a few years ago. They are also priceless for cleaning up after grinding/filing steel. The ability to slide the magnets away from the filings is the key. No need to scrape the magnets. Everything just drops away neatly in the trash bin.
