Machine torch won't fire but hand torch works fine (SOLVED)

Here’s what I have

Crossfire Pro w/ torch height control
Primeweld Cut60
Temco CNC torch (bought from Primeweld)

I just installed the CNC torch and it will not fire. I am trying to manually fire using fire control. The air comes on, and I can hear the relay click, and the air pressure changes when it does that. The LED inside the controller lights up so I think it’s getting the signal from the plasma cutter.

I tested with the hand torch that originally came with the Primeweld, which worked in the past, and Firecontrol will fire that torch.

I did initially have the CNC torch clamped too low, which I fixed, and the electrode now seems to move freely (some force to push it up but springs right back down, force required feels about the same as the hand torch).

Any thoughts on what to try or a way to test the CNC torch outside of firecontrol?

Thanks!

Are the correct consumables installed? So, what are you saying about the hand torch working when FireControl calls for it? The machine torch won’t fire through FireControl. Please send us pictures of your control box wiring, especially the torches on/off connector on the control box.

I am running the consumables that Primeweld recommends and came with the machine torch. They appear to be exactly the same as the ones for the hand torch though, which is why I went with this machine torch.

The hand torch works fine. I switched back to it and cut my project. It fires when firecontrol calls for it, cuts like it should.

I’ll take the cover off the box and get a picture later today.

Check the pins on the euro connection. Please make sure they are the same as the hand torch.
The connection that goes into the plasma cutter.
You may have gotten a torch setup for a different cutter. @mechanic416 will know more. If the electrode moves freely, it has to be a torch issue. I had one time when the pins were in the wrong locations.

They are different. There are pins on 1, 3, 6, and 9 on the hand touch and only 1 and 9 on the machine torch.

Possible that may be due to the hand torch having to send a signal back from depressing the trigger though?

Cool. I’ll wait and see what he says.

I should also note that my 2T/4T setting is on 2T currently. Reading the manual, its not clear but it says it may need to be on 4T for certain remote activated cutters. I’ll wait to hear on the pin locations before trying anything else though.

2T never 4T

Make sure the air for the machine torch is at least 5 psi more then the hand torch. This is most likely the trouble.

A machine torch only needs pilot arc wires in this case pins 1 and 9.

You heard that crank up the air to 75 psi not 50 not 60. 75 psi. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That did the trick, at 5psi higher it came on but shut off after a few seconds. Bumped it up another 5 and it comes on and stays on.

Thank you both!!! :grinning:
