I have been reading all the threads getting ready for my MR1 to arrive…
Lots of great ideas and several that I plan to incorporate in my machine.
The 3rd baseplate is a great idea, but I would like to take it 1 step further.
There was also a post about someone using the 2" fly cutter to surface of the baseplate and this got me thinking… 23" of X travel + 2" fly cutting tool = 25" of travel that can be surfaced during assembly. The current base plate is only 20" wide and 24" should be possible.
This is what I am thinking. Use a 4" x 20.25" x 3/4 bar in between the two stock base plates and a 10" x 24" x 3/4" bar across the top.
Ive got the 3 base plate setup on my machine. i dont think you will add much value extending to the sides. If you have anything that large you need to face, usually its rigid enough to just hang off the side and face it. Unless you have some weird object that isn’t flat or has feet on the bottom with no other way to fixture than the feet I don’t think it would be worth your trouble.
