It's been awhile. Post those projects!

So there not just a standard ABC type

Either CO2 mix, or Halon.

Ok here is my wife’s 2023 x-mas present finally done. This was made of wood and back lit with led strip lights.
Was cut on a laser due to the fine detail.

This will go in her craft room. She makes all types of cards and is very good at it.

Nice job on the LED lighting. How did you end up doing it? Did you add a lip to the backside to keep some of the light in?

I did here is the back side. The part with all the slots is called a living hinge. It allows me to bend the 1/4” plywood around the circle on the back side.

The top coat I used on the back was different than the front. Good thing it’s on the back.

You did an amazing job with the sign, but I noticed that Grandma’s pictures are on the floor.

Brilliant! That’s how I had pictured doing it if I ever actually do a lighted sign. Well done.

Cards look cool too!

Had to quick draw up another doggo tonight, did this one in 15 minutes! Think that’s my new record. Think I’m gonna try incorporating the sawtooth hanger right into that top flange. Need to check my dimensions but I should be able to bend it.

How does everyone handle the business side of things? I’m toying with the idea of selling some tractor parts and don’t want to get in trouble with the tax man. I don’t want to do it through my farm business since I think that would be a nightmare dealing with taxable and tax exempt products. The though crossed my mind to even partner up with a local retailer who is a friend of mine who could probably sell them. Ideally I’d want something where I could take payment through venmo or paypal if i was selling direct to individuals.

For running a company, I’m fairly tax stupid since I’m ag exempt on a lot of things that a shop would have to deal with. Don’t really want to call my tax guy on it yet since he’ll just send me a bill for the phone call…

That is a really amazing idea of incorporating the frame of the metal you are cutting:Form following function! :trophy:

However, my metal bending skills with my Harborfreight press would be enough to remove any hope that someone might like the presentation.

As far as business, selling at local street fairs is NOT the way to go (in my experience). Your friend might be a good way to dip your toe into it and see what interest arises.

I sell some things on eBay. They send me a 1099 form at the end of the year. I don’t sell enough to make it worth doing the math to deduct my materials cost, so I just pay tax on all of it.

I get buyers from all over the country, because I was the only person reproducing a discontinued part for Jeep YJ’s. Selling though eBay gives customers a little more confidence that they aren’t getting ripped off.

Any of the selling platforms and payment processors are going to send you a 1099 for anything over $600 in total sales.

Thanks! I came up with those frames awhile back, people seem to really like it. Makes it stand out a bit. I charge 75 bucks extra on a dog cutout to do those flanges bent welded and blended and I’ve never had anyone not do it since I started it. I just bend them in a frankenstein swag brake.

Yea my target audience is very focused. I’m in corn country and you can’t throw a rock without hitting something john deere green. I’ve got a bunch of design for things I’ve made over the years out if necessity that are just sitting there doing nothing. Anything from gps mounts, cab brackets, camera mounts, planter parts, packout mounts, cattle gate latches. Pretty much everything would be sales tax exempt for ag use but I’m sure I’d have to keep a record of it.

It would be nice to have a storefront of some sort. Does ebay treat you pretty well as far as fees go?

They have fees, but every other platform does too. I just adjust my price to cover it and still get what I need out of it.

For a while, I was the only one producing these parts in the world, so I could charge the price I needed to make it worthwhile. Now someone else is making them and selling them on Amazon for a price that I can’t match. I still have them listed, but sales have fallen way off.

Just reading their website… 13.25% for automotive parts, but 3% on heavy equipment parts. Hmmm.

You cant throw a rock because you don’t have any to throw!!  Nothing but beautiful top soil where you are. Out here in the foothills of Northern Utah we have more rocks than soil! We just moved down into the valley, and I hear guys complain about having to change a swather knife section… It seems like I change a couple every time I cut… and that’s after rolling the rocks down every spring. You have probably never even seen a rock rake out there.

I think John Wayne said it best in McLintock “…you cant farm 6000 feet above sea level” I dont know how many times I tried to ephasize that part of the movie to my dad… he never listened.

 it feels like we have more rocks every year. We just sold a vermeer rock picker this year. Had it for years and couldnt remember the last time I used it so it needed to go. We collect a lot of rocks with the bean head every fall. Dont know where they all come from
