Issues with MR-1 Touch Probe

I’m trying to zero my touch probe for the first time for my MR-1. In langmuir’s touch probe setup video, they talk about adjusting the 4 set screws, which i presume are the 4 set screws above each of the lights on each side. But, when I adjust the screws, nothing happens. The probe alignment doesn’t change, but the screws tighten and loosen, like they’re bottoming out against something.

If anyone has any ideas, or videos on what exactly they are doing, that would be greatly appreciated.

Where does it say you have to zero it? It should work right out of the box. At least mine did, no adjustment needed.

Mine did too. There is a video from years ago to dial it in using the set screws on the sides. It has 4 set screw that can be adjusted maybe .002 in each direction by loosening the bolts on the back. I have zero issues with this probe. I can understand the issues, though.

The 4 screws on top (external hex) clamp the shaft to the probe body. They need to be slightly loosened to adjust anything.

The 4 set screws center the shaft on the probe body. They are adjusted the same way as a 4-jaw lathe chuck.

If you just play with the set screws without loosening those top bolts nothing will adjust. I think that is what you are feeling @Dudenstein7

What Alex said. Some folks have never used a 4 jaw chuck so to elaborate - Adjusting is done by first loosening one set screw, then tightening the opposite end set screw. Very important - it doesn’t need to be tightened too much. If you’re finding that they are very hard to turn the set screw, then they are overtightened. I’ll probably make a video about this because it’s really difficult to adjust at first and had me confused. It wan’t until I took it apart to really understand what the screws are doing.

They all need to be adjusted and if yours was tuned out of box then you were very very lucky! But they go out of tune quite easily. The reason is because the contacts inside are mounted to a pcb board, and pcb is not rigid in any way. So it will shift and flex over time.

I made a video explaining calibration and disassembly.
