I'm building a powder coat oven

Then another note if I do a part with a lot of sharpe edges I will spray edges then flow powder. Then coat as normal to prevent edge pull on parts.

I read somewhere they call that framing, where you get almost a run type of look near edges on flat pieces. I’ve been lucky with that so far, but everything I powder coat is basically going to be flat with sharp edges. I just finished putting my logo on the oven, I only did it in green because it was a test piece. I need to dial back the blade pressure a bit.

Lots of time it is hard to see. With a bright led flashlight looks like a sore thumb. A super bright flashlight is every coaters friend. I use them to look for light spots in the powder. Easier to fix before you cook.

Got the goodies from Columbia today, 4 new one pound hoppers with latex lines. I did forget to order the mounting brackets though…luckily I have a Crossfire Pro and I can just make them. Painted a couple of pieces today for a friend, have a couple more to paint tomorrow. Also whoever suggested vinegar to remove mill scale, I’m putting it to the test tonight. I bought a 40 gallon tub and 12 gallons of vinegar, I have a piece soaking in there right now. I’ll post pics tomorrow how it turns out. Hopefully it works good, I have Federal Camo Green in the gun right now and this piece is getting that color tomorrow with any luck.

This was a test of doing single line cuts in a piece, mixed results. My buddy asked me to design a '55 Ford F100 for him and this is what I put together.

He also wanted the Punisher Skull in this green…Again original work credit goes to Todd Kelch, I only made minor adjustments to it.

I use kiddy pools to soak it cheap. I actually making a few pieces that are 43 by 33. Takes about six gallons to cover 3 pieces that size. I sore used vinegar in 5 gallon buckets with lids.

Oh be sure to plug holes on cans so they won’t draw moisture.

I just started doing a 15mins soak/rinse with one cup baking soda to gallon water.
Then blow dry afterwards. This keeps parts from flash rusting. I had some parts I did that sat for 2 weeks afterwards and still had not started rusting. I do this every time now.

Here is the finished result, let it soak for 3 hours then wiped it all down with a paper towel while it was submerged in the vinegar.

It got easily 99% of it off.

Yes now that I’m older I can afford to buy it. Midlife crisis purchase.

My kids know it’s the forbidden sandbox.

Thanks @Knick been looking for a way to mitigate the flash rust post vinegar soak. I am going to give this a try.

I have a “bath” I made out of some scrap 2x4 and plywood. I have a 1-1/2 inch gap between plywood halves to create a low spot for the drain. I line it with 7 mill plastic and use one of the original water table drains at the center. It’s just cobbled together with a couple of wood screws, it’s not nearly as pretty as the crab sandbox but it works.

@Knick on the soak with 1 cup baking soda per gallon of water do you have any residue afterwards from the baking soda?

I used to take scotch brite after the vinegar, but now after vinegar I go right to baking soda mix after 10-15 mins I rinse and scotch brite . You could try it different ways that just how I do it. I dont see any residue afterwards.

I scrubbed it in the vinegar bath after 3 hour soak, just left it submerged and wiped it. It can still be wiped clean of mill scale after the rinse?

Mine can, but I soak for 24hrs but I use my vinegar over and over just add fresh to it every so often.

Mine foams up like it’s alive but it still works.
