Our school district’s FIRST Robotics team recently purchased and student-assembled a working MR-1. How do we take a STEP file and convert to code that can be used by the machine? We have access to Fusion 360 and AutoCAD Inventor.
Congrats, that’s awesome for the team.
You can do it in Fusion 360. It’s more of a process than converting a file for 3D printing because you have to select tools, materials, and pick the process (like are you going to drill a hole or bore it with an endmill).
NYCCNC is a great youtube channel for Fusion 360, from starting to doing advanced stuff. Here is their intro video:
That will be an awesome opportunity for the students to learn machining techniques and work processes.
Like Alex said, it’s not as simple as just converting a model into code like 3D printing. There will be processes and orders of operation that need to be considered when developing the programs and eventually the parts they will machine.
As they advance through the processes, share some updates! It’s cool to hear that kids will be learning and experiencing machining.
