General questions re speeds, air and amps

So, I’ve been using my pro and gyoertherm 45 so with machine torch for about 2 weeks now. I downloaded the tool file that someone was nice enough to put together and share.

Question 1 - air pressure

How often do you adjust the pressure? I don’t have a valve to adjust the air pressure. But can get one. Otherwise the compressor is just set for 125 psi.

Question 2 - Amps

Yep I find I always leave my plasma at 45 amps. I have adjusted it a few times testing things out. But my cuts are not good then. I’m usually cutting 16 or 18 gauge. Do you adjust yours often or use less for those gauges?

Question 3 - speeds

I find some of the programmed tools have the speeds at 350” min. That’s fast. Can this machine handle that? Is a lot accuracy lost?

I cannot for the life of me figure out my speeds and amps My cuts aren’t great. I have the water filter on the compressor and the one built into the plasma and I always drain the tank. I recently put new consumables on. The last set I just changed had about 675 piercings.

Thanks for your help.

Try a cut at 30A, 60ipm and 75psi on that 16 or 18 gauge and see if it looks better. As I understand it, that cutting current and air pressure are way too high, likely making some sort of distorted plasma cone.

Ok thanks! I’ll grab a regulator tomorrow to adjust the air pressure and give that a go tomorrow. Thank you!

The Hypertherm cutter is self regulating for air pressure. The only thing you need to do is feed it the recommended pressure, which is 90-135psi with air flowing.

60IPM on 16 ga. steel is really slow, even at 30 amps. I generally cut 16 ga. at 30 amps and 150IPM.

Hypertherm cut charts are based on leaving the machine set at 45 amps. The Pro table has a max speed of 300IPM, so you need to stay below that speed.

Do you have a Hypertherm PowerMax 45 XP or Hypertherm PowerMax 45?

What consumable set are you running?
Standard 45 amp shielded/ unshielded? Finecut?

Most of the hypertherm cut charts will have a production higher speed IPM and a quality lower speed IPM on the same line in the cut chart.

have the 45 xp. And using fine cut consumables with a machine torch.

And i out finecut I because I assumed I would I get more detail in the cuts.

I’m new to this !

Ok thank you.

So, I don’t have to adjust or worry about my air pressure from the compressor because my hypertherm will take care of it.

If hypertherm charts provide specs for cutting at 45 amps. Why do you turn yours down to 30? Slower speeds for accuracy?

Thanks again

I don’t have a Hypertherm and I run nozzles that are sized to run at the amperages that I use. You may need to turn yours down, because the recommended cut speed at 45 amps exceeds the max speed of the table.
