I am saddened to say that Fusion 360 has removed the ability to perform “Save As” from the primary menu bar for us Hobbyist users. I use this feature is when I really wanted to rework a current design but did not want to disturb the original design.
But all is not lost. You can still right click on the top item on the Browser tree and select “Save Copy As.”
You know I’m a Fusion guy. But they do a crappy job rolling out these updates. If you click on what’s new, you better be prepared to get a NASA design engineer to help you decipher their explanations.
I agree that they would care less about the free edition of this program. $ 500 per year is still a bargain compared to others. Solidworks emailed me a deal of $3000. I’m sorry, but it costs $2650 per seat for commercial use.
You know I have said my wife is very supportive. Just minutes ago, I explained how Fusion 360 keeps removing features because they want us to subscribe.
Mrs. ChelanJim: How much does that cost?
Me: Hundreds of dollars…per year!
Mrs. ChelanJim: I hate to say… (we all know she didn’t ‘hate’ to say it, otherwise she would have stopped there)
Mrs. ChelanJim: (continuing) I hate to say it but you really should have seen that coming.
I’m not getting how Save Copy As is any different or worse than Save As… And can you still ‘Copy’ in the file browser. That’s usually what I do when I’m expecting to work on a derivative design.
Agree that Fusion is pretty shitty about the updates they roll out but I wanted to add that if you like Solidworks, and are/were a service member, you can get access to all of their programs for as little as $24/year.
Sadly I opted to pay for it over a year ago and never used it; upon opening their CAD program, the default layout was that of a blueprint I used to use at my old job.
Being a hobbyist, I considered Solidworks as hugely overkill for me and couldn’t be bothered to learn a new CAD program.
Just thought I’d mention it for those that do prefer Solidworks.
Solidworks’ sales system is like buying a new car. Nobody gets the same deal or answer. Their sales team contacted me at the $2600 price and then called me 300 times, reducing the price. I’m like you. I’m too old to learn a new CAD program.
With that being said, where and when Langmuir comes out with a 4th axis, that add-on on Fusion is almost $1900 per year. Three axis is standard, and the 4th axis is a new ball game.
This is really weird: they have removed that little blue ball with the stars on the “Save As” menu item now and I did not update today. Same file and I have not closed/opened Fusion 360. This menu item is now available whether it is a new or old file.
So…never mind, I guess???
I must admit that I never tried to click on that menu item before, since it had the blue star ball on it. The other odd thing was the brown ball on the “Save” item.
I am now wondering if that was some artifact in the graphic card. Don’t know.
