I have been milling out putters and after the roughing I take .002 off all over in finishing passes with the same 3/8 coated 4 flute. I am also following the finishing settings from the MR1 chart. 7200 rpm at 30ipm.
I’m not really sure what to expect on surface finish. I am thinking of buying some coated bullnose 4 flutes for roughing and coated bullnose 6 flutes for finishing only. Does anyone have any insight on what else could improve finish quality?
Are the feed lines too rough feeling, or are you wanting more of a visual change?
Do your rough passes have the same surface finish?
Depending on material it can be tricky to get a good finish cut. Couple of things to think about or try:
Change the amount of rough stock to make a thicker chip. Say .010" on the wall maybe.
Going with a higher helix or variable helix cutter might help the appearance of the finish.
You can also play with conventional vs climb milling the finish pass.
Book values are good for a starting point, but sometimes it’s trial and error to get it really dialed in.

Thats exactly what was going on, my finishing pass was too thin. I doubled it and that drastically changed the finish quality. I am going to split the roughing and finishing passes into two files so I can run a new 6 flute for the finishing pass.

Awesome!
Once you get it dialed in post another picture for reference if anyone runs into a similar problem down the road. Also so we can admire it for ourselves
