Engraving with a Chamfer tool

Hello,
I have figured out many of the settings for cutting but one I am having trouble with is engraving on the side of a part.
I and trying to engrave letters at a depth of 0.2mm with a 6mm chamfer tool. I am running the spindle at 8000 rpm and 5ipm. The result is that it keeps leaving burrs on the top surface of my part where it looks like it melted the metal and peeled it back.

Anyone have experience with engraving with a chamfer tool and any tips?

I have moved your post to the MR-1 category since that’s the only one that makes sense for your question. Let me know if this isn’t the case.

Thanks I Posted it in the wrong spot

No problem. Welcome to the forum.

You might want to add which metal you are trying to engraving. If I was trying to engrave, I’d probably use a 60 degree Vee Bit. But I wouldn’t try it on anything other than a soft material like brass or Alum.

I have not experienced any issues with engraving. I use a 1/4 inch 45 degree engraving bit at 8000RPM and 10 inch/min. My depth of cut is .005 inches (.127mm) . Are you using Fusion for your cam? I use the trace function to engrave lettering rather than the engrave function. I set my chamfer width at .003 inches and chamfer tip offset at .002 inches. This gives me very good results in both aluminum and cold rolled steel.

This is good info. In your experience how much ‘loading’ is there on the system when doing this? The reason I ask is that this would be useful if it works on my CNC Router with its 800W spindle and less than ideal rigidity.
