So with this expansion is the lead screw still the same diameter?
As soon as I saw the announcement. Just finished assembling the standard model so will expanded it before it even cuts any metal.
It would appear that this initial sale is going quite well. My order is #7614. So if its just expansion kit sales, and someone said there order is #7200………depending on what their initial component qty………it might be a longer wait then the 2.5 week. Still very much worth that.
daniel is this a .5" lead screw or stock 3/8?
It is stock ACME 3/8-8 4 start. Just cut to the length required for the XL.
ok, I may still order this but I had already planned to extend mine to a bit wider and use the .5 diameter. thanks
Ok, so a longer ball screw and two longer square tubes= $150. Plus shipping? Has anyone else’s specked out the overall cost of doing this yourselves? Seems like we are being fed a Line here and told it’s a high tech upgrade…
I’ve ran int so many changes that seem to be benefiting langmuirs bottom line and not the customer so much…
If I had my own machine shop in my back yard like many do here I would def do it myself. But I dont have the equipment to do it myself and would have to hire many things done. I work full time, on call 24/7 mow 6 acres , 4 gardens, acasionally sleep and eat. Have a family thats always wanting something done. The crossfire for me is just a hobby so having a kit like this ready to bolt on is for me. Not having the tools and time makes it worth $180. But I do see what your saying. Im just not equipped to make things like this . Just a hobby table.
Our customers are free to decide if it is worth the purchase price. Based on the truly unbelievable amount of XL kits we sold on the first day they were released, we believe that many find the price to be reasonable.
I purchase one the first day can’t wait to get it
After cost and labor I doubt they are making alot off this kit and even if they are making some that’s why they have took the risks and made investments.I asked myself would I rather source the metal and parts and design and build the kit or just cut a few signs and sell them off to fund the upgrade.Your time is worth something especially if you work as much as I do.
There is no question that this is worth it. I missed the announcement on the forum, but got the email. Ordered it without a second of hesitation, right there on my phone. I would have probably paid twice that for the kit; I could do it myself, but have zero time to make it happen…
Langmuir is a profit seeking organization. They cant be here to support their customers unless they have profit.
No one should be complaining about the $150 price point… at all. Hell I bet the majority who placed the ordered would have had no problem paying double that, I know I wouldn’t have.
It’s $125 for 6’ of stainless steel square tubing. That’s pick it up pricing, not shipped. I found the ACME lead screw for $118 for 3 feet. Again no shipping included.
So in addition to my time to fabricate (drilling holes, cutting stock, etc) I’m nowhere near $150.
They’re undoubtedly getting bulk prices on the materials but I don’t begrudge them a profit.
Let us know how it works out if you do it yourself as you suggest. Lots of us would likely be very interested in how much you save
I ordered online within an hour of seeing it on Facebook. Didn’t know there was an email or a message here on the forum. Any chance you can make sure I get in on the first batch???
I can get 6 feet of 2x2 11 gauge stainless tubing for $68 locally, I might make my own kit since I do have a CNC mill in the garage. And I have a feeling that stainless would hold up better over time than zinc plated steel.
Excellent. That’s better than I can get locally.
You’ll need an ACME screw but lots of sources online.
The CNC mill will help a lot to get the tubes drilled correctly. That or a mag drill are probably the right tools vs the typical owner’s drill press or hand drills.
At the end of the day I’ll pay someone else to source & fab the parts because I have too much else going on - and I like making more than minimum wage on my time, even if I’m using that time to do something non-revenue generating.
What the expansion does isn’t rocket science or even particularly hard since it’s just moving the gantry stops out to the edge of the table. But it’s interesting that several people have done full table blowups to 2x4 or even 4x4 and crafted THC add-ons but no one put together a sub $150 kit to do the extra 10" expansion.
I’ll second that one !!
Heck, I don’t even know how to use this thing yet! I’ve cut 5 pieces out so far since Jan this year! But, I know I’m going to completely retire in a few months…so I’ll get to it and learn. So…I ordered the Kit!
