Coupler slip? Nope. Shaft snap... Damn

Did a bunch of programming early this morning came out to the shop, loaded a fresh sheet into the machine and started traveling to program origin.

I thought I was lucky never having a coupler slipping issue but then it looked like it was slipping.

I untightened it and tightened it a couple times and then I realized the end of the shaft had actually sheared off…

This is my x axis shaft.

Nice looking TIG weld!

I sincerely second that! :tumbler_glass:

I have to agree. Excellent job … I think you have TIG welded just a bit?

Here’s a close up picture of what I believe is the inclusion that this break migrated from.

@Bigdaddy2166 @Cletus @RAM

Thank you and I wish I could take the credit.

My partner in the CNC game has a long history of prototype welding and is an absolute perfectionist. @wassink_welding on Instagram.

I can tig weld but I’m average, skills wise. don’t think I’ve ever TIG welded anything but stainless steel now that I’m thinking about it.

They got the part out their door the same day.

Just reaffirms in my mind this is the CNC company I am sticking with.

There’s definitely going to be an XR in my future.

Thanks @langmuir-aksel

Definitely a top shelf company. Have always done me right. I’d put that repaired lead screw on the wall. Really did a great job on that. Very impressive.

I had a lead screw break the same way about 1 year ago. Langmuir immediately sent me a replacement! Bravo Langmuir!

Since I just ordered a XR and dont have any plasma from them only there setup table. What caused the failure? was it a bearing that froze. Thanks John

Not a bearing, I believe there may have been a small inclusion in the material itself which cause it to snap clean to the shoulder of the shaft.

I run mostly high speed operations ( 250 - 300 ipm ) and the repeated change of direction puts a ton of force on this part.

The replacement part should be here today or tomorrow.

I have ran it several times since the repair and have had no problems.

Congrats! I hope to have one in my future too. They seem to have put a lot of thought and care into their product line while making it affordable.
