My question is do you regret not doing all the custom bases and other home brew hacks vs the conventional instructions supplied by Langmuir?Im going to start assembly soon and i tend to get paralyzed by the many different ways of doing things some times.
Wait till you see my build, lol.
I built my machine by the standard LS build sheet. The only things different are my control pc and other electronics are on the right side as opposed to the left as they show. That is due to where I built the machine and not wanting the display to be hanging out in the middle of a walkway.
What I wish I had done is any of the coolant drain modifications some of these guys jave come up with. The standard setup works, but I continually get slight clogs by the fine materials getting past the screen and settling in the internal tube. A few times over the course of a 2 or 3 hour operation with stainless I will have to purge the drain lines with air to get coolant to return to the tank. It’s not as much a problem with aluminum though since the chips tend to be bigger. Ductile iron, and stainless steel tend to end up with some fairly fine stuff that works its way into the drain tubes though.
If you do anything. Increase the size of the drain tubes and bulkheads on the bottom. The standard locations are just fine. I kick myself in the ass everyday for not doing this. Increase the tube size to at least 1/2 or more. You will thank me later…
Yes definitely do the upgrade on your dreams I have found by doing this it makes life so much easier when it comes to clean up also I did a few other months which I see on this forum for example the mod for your touch off and also did one for the touch probe on the side of the spindle I will be doing a lot more when I get the time like sliding doors for the front in high impact plastic keep an eye on this space there will be more to come
I would also suggest increasing the size of the drains, at this point that is my only complaint.
I kinda wish I would have upsized the hose as well but what I did was drop 2 3/8" lines from the drain tubes to a 3/4" PVC and it runs down the center of the pan to the other 2 drains and then a 3/4 90 to 3/4 hose right into the tank. This has not failed so far but I do not cut a ton yet
I would also change the mesh screens somehow. If you had a 3D printer I would create new drains in the same location, just add some clips to hold the screens in place.
If you have an enclosure, I would definitely put that rubber guard around the edges of the clear plastic as it rattles something terrible. Finally put down some screaming hot pink epoxy to set that thing off
You can still do the upgrade on the drain it just takes a little more time but it is well worth it I did my upgrade before the concrete went in and it turns out to be the best thing you could do at the time but you can still do it after your concrete is poured it just takes a little bit of time and it will be okay
