Can you run your mr1 without a probe

Okay guys I have a problem with my mr1 I broke the touch probe can I run without one. If I take half the tool and put in the corner of the work please can I use that as x0 y0 z0 and start my job from there or do I have to have the probe. Is there a manual way to set up to run your mr1

no you do not need a probe.

you can use any tool even a pencil in the spindle, just position the tip in x,y,z and press zero on the top right to zero all axis on the point of WCS. Once that is done then measure your tool offset then insert your endmill.

The MR1 will run without the probe. Accuracy will suffer using the eyeball method you suggest, but it will work. An edge finder will be more accurate for setting X and Y. Touching the tool off the top of the part will allow you to set the Z.

Thank you I will try this in the morning and see what comes out but I tried to take the tip out of the probe and it was so hard I used vice grips and a small Allen key that broke inside the hole why was it so tight

Red locktight?
I keep 2 spares in my box. If you ever have a problem again, just take it apart and heat it up a little bit. It will come off then.
At least mine did. Its easy to unassemble and put back together.

I tried to put heat to it with a little crack pipe torch and it did not go well I tried small amounts of heat backwards and forwards and try to undo it still way too tight and the whole thing is turning inside I think this unit is officially f*****

Crack lighter? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I took mine completely apart and held the rocker mechanism in a soft vise. But yes, I purchased 2 backups.
They are certainly not high end probes. They work for my stuff. Again I’m not making parts for NASA either.

Around here we call that a soldering torch, lol…

Get you one of these. You wont regret it if you think you have f’d your current one up. I use it more than my Langmuir probe. Very Very accurate.

Those things are great…but it always cracks me up when people who have them are like “just get one of these” like they aren’t $400+. lol

They are $400 for a reason. There are less expensive versions out there. I do have one, but the touch probe works well for me so far. No issues. It take me two to get one good one though.

I’ve had issues since day one with the touch probe, finally gave up on it for XY coordinates, but it works perfect for Z axis probing for the tool setter. I could never get the set screws to give me dead zero or even close to that so I use wigglers to set zero on XY coordinates.

i sent out for a new probe tips next day .I hope to have it tomorrow some time

I had issues getting mine perfect, but i think it was due to the directions provided. Once i opened it up it made more sense on how to adjust to make perfect.

I must be out of it. Where do you get your probe tips?

Thanks,

Don

The Langmuir probe uses M3 tips. That is a fairly common size that you can find on Amazon, MSC, McMaster, etc. Langmuir also sells them of course (but I think you need to call).
