Bad ball screw - support is silent (Solved)

I have a bad ball screw on my left Y axis, machine is only 6 months old. Grinding noise, wobble, tolerances off by .02 at times….

What can I do to replace? Langmuir support has been essentially worthless. 5 days to reply to a simple email. Anyone?

I would email them again or call on Monday morning. I have never had an issue with Langmuir.

Who knows what happened? @langmuir-jake langmuir-jake is one of the big cheeses :cheese_wedge:

How many hours do you have on it about? Regularly lube it? Is everything tight?

Like mentioned, I would just call.

I emailed about an item that showed as “delivered with shipment” when it in fact wasn’t in the shipment received. Email was sent after hours (Thursday evening) and I got a reply the next morning.

I called that day as well to ask if they sold banners (which they don’t). I only mention this because when I call, they answer right away and this was yesterday.

In my experience their customer support is crazy fast to answer whether via email or phone.

I have about 40 hours total time on the machine. It’s a nasty grinding noise on the left ball Y axis ball screw….i am just frustrated as all of my parts are out of tolerance now and the machine is sidelined. I’ll call on Monday….

Have you greased them yet? You need 4 mm x .07 metric grease zerks for the ball carriage. I would say that at almost 50 hours, it is due. The zerks are a pain to find, if I remember correctly. McMaster Carr is where I got mine.

4mm and 6mm zerks…

Isnt that just for the linear rails? Other than manually lubing the screws (which I have done); there is no way to lube the ball nut - which is where my grinding is coming from.

I’m sure they will send you a new one. Maybe a ball bearing has failed? They are pretty bulletproof, though.

Just for future reference, my machine uses a M6 x 1mm fitting (not M6 x 0.75mm like I had ordered!).

Just closing the loop here - Langmuir sent out a new ball screw at no cost. I have not yet had time to install but am appreciative of them sending it!

A few tips from my personal learning as you use the new ball screw:

  • My ball screws became loose and I was getting bad repeatability on my parts. I was unaware that the tightening nuts on all of my screws were loose. These are the nuts at the opposite ends of where the steppers are.
  • If you’re hearing noises, then the ball bearings are shot. You’ll need to replace them
  • Shot ball bearings happen from a few things - Overtightened nuts causing excessive load on the bearings. And cutting fluid getting inside the ball bearing over time blows them out.
  • I always keep spare ballbearings
  • I check the tightness of the nuts at least once a week if I’m running lots of parts.

Hope that’s helpful.
