Air Compressor Comparisons

Because you’re a good guy, that’s why. It’s a curse!

I’m not sure that’s true , but I guess I thought I’d share the info since I went thru the same purchasing dilemma / decision and ran into the same issue with the Kobalt - I’m sure many have as well. I’m headed to Lowes tomorrow to pick up an application for the new boss of the web sales department. I’ll quit as soon as I fire the marketing department and fix the website.

Here’s a better label. Don’t believe everything you read online :scream::clown_face::poop:

One more note I’ll make is that at this price point, many of these compressors are just re-branded Campbell Hausfeld or other common makes with new stickers and paint jobs - Kobalt is a Lowes house brand, but they don’t make compressors - they just strike a deal with a big manufacturer to market them and paint it blue / yellow / red or whatever flavor of the day. Ok, I’m out. I hope you find the right one that fits your need.

OMG… I forgot what brand that big blue thing in my shop is!
Yeah. It’s a Kobalt. I’m an idiot…
Not sure why Husky was on my mind.

So I got out today to look at some compressors, first stop was Lowe’s. The 60 gallon 2 stage Kobalt compressor is the same in the pics above but clearly says 7.6 cfm @ 90psi. It looks cheap as hell, all Chinese parts, pump and motor, cheap air intake housing that was severely dented and I felt I could crush it with my bare hands. I could not even think of purchasing one, it just looked awful.

Then I went to TS, they have Dewalt and IR in stock. He said they have very few complaints or returns with the IR, some issues with Dewalt. His biggest complaint about the IR is how loud they are and basically said if it’s in my garage I won’t be able to stand it.

So I will keep looking.

Anyone ever buy from https://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/ ? They have many options as well as Northern Tool. I may end up going that route and buying a Quincy, they are said to be quieter.

So the part number & model ( Item: #905520 Model: #XC602000) were the same and it said on the label 7.6@90psi for $589? Post a pic of the label - it might help someone!

Not going to make it back there but the one on Lowe’s website is the same model, looks like it’s not a misprint just a manufacturing change in specs. I’m telling you it just looked terribly cheap all around.

Model 905520

If I get down there this week, I’ll grab a shot of the one in my store. When I was looking at them it was the 11 CFM one.

I’m not sure what that would resolve. We have two data points for the very same part number and they are conflicting. From this information, I am VERY glad that I did not go with Kobalt for my compressor. I think, James, that you have much more important things to do, like make butterflies for your daughter… :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

True that, but at this point I’m invested. @Donny1 may never find the unicorn compressor he’s looking for, but I want to know the truth behind the Kobalt compressor mystery. I’ve simply got too many keystrokes invested in this thread to let it go. I demand answers!!! (and pics or it never happened!) lol

If it means that much to you I will go back that way by the weekend and do a photo shoot.

I think it’s necessary at this point. I’m kidding, but I am curious what the deal is with it. There are a bunch of 3.7 hp / 60 gal compressors in that price range from various outlets that are all pretty much the same specs.

Wait, I may have the answer. It might be a California, regulatory thing. To much cfm is harmful to your health. Therefore must be regulated, limited, taxed, taxed again and then cost 3 times as much to get same amount.

True but most in that area are 10-11 cfm.

Calculating…11CFM @ 90psi = 3.7hp…minus CA regulations = 7.6CFM? LOL…you may be right!
Where I live, they get offended if you decline the lead shavings on your salad!

Make sure you include the mfr date. I’ll bet there is a correlation to the ratings (ie, they got caught lying and had to fix it downward on newer systems).

I got mine online, and picked up at the store 2 weeks later. Funny though how the labels further up in the post show 11cfm and 3.7hp, and mine says 7.6 cfm and 3.7? With the exact same model numbers and such? The other lable is a year older, but what really could have changed? Wierd…

I know it will handle a good hypertherm from what other users have said. It just all depends on your load. I also thought the V heads might run a little cooler than the combined 2 stage models.

My suspicion is they lied on the original labels and had to correct them on the newer ones. If the one you bought works for you, no problem. UPDATE: Whoops, my previous posting on compressibiliity slipped a decimal point…
