That Jim, I would love to be a fly on the wall at his place. I would love to see how he pulls off all the stuff he does in a 24hr period! ![]()
Framing started today! Getting real!!
Not sure how he figured out what this is for! ![]()

I would tell my wife “you rest I will get the dishes”
They gonna get skin on that before the show flies?
Times running short.
They said they will be started on the 2nd floor tomorrow and the roof will be on 3 weeks from when they started… We will see.
We have had an un-seasonably warm fall… hopefully it continues for a couple more weeks.
Yeah, I am tired of the ?Winter? in Colorado.
Did not have to shovel my driveway once last winter.
I have been wishing for a hard, long, cold and deep snow winter, like NOW!
Our spring/early summer this year stayed cool for longer than normal… other than having to cover my garden in late June it was fantastic!!
Winter 2022/23 was the coldest snowiest winter we have had for a long time.
Bite me. ![]()
There was one “Isolated” storm that dropped north of 18". 10 miles east of that where I live, 1/8th inch, dusting, melted off by 11am.
We had snow waste deep on Easter… Almost lost the kids on the easter egg hunt. I put on snowshoes to hide the candy ect. Kids thought they were UUGE bunny tracks!

Here is my “contribution” 30’ W16x44 donated by one of my fabricator clients. They even welded the studs, fabed the column plates and painted it. I was going to do all that but I realized time was a factor. I didn’t know they planned on just giving it to me. It was delivered a couple months ago and I hadn’t seen a bill so I called and they told me no charge! Very generous!! One mistake I made was I planned on (3) 2x6s inside the wall on one end and a 6x column on the other end so the colum plates were different spacing. Well I told the contractor 3 times the beam was directional and labeled with a marker which end went where. They still managed to screw it up. They nailed the joist hangers on inverse of how they should have been. Put a 6x column in the wall instead of a built up 2x6. Instead of making them take off all the joist hangers and re-install I cut off the plates and re-welded them lastnight. Finished about 1am. If I had it to do over I would have just made the spacing same both ends to eliminate the confusion.
Enjoy seeing the pictures of the house build. One of the best times of my life was watching the build of our house 10 years ago.
That is very frustrating. There were surveyor markers in my gully and I hired someone to do some clearing and smoothing the ground so I could better mow with a brush hog. I pointed out this marker on 3 different occasions. 8 hours later, the marker was gone.
I had another making a path in my woods with an excavator. I said "I don’t care what trees you need to knock down but leave those two Madrona trees. They were the only two in a one mile radius, from what I figured. Four hours later, they were piled up with the rest of the trees he knocked down.
Example of a Madrona tree:

That is very sad! Those are marvelous looking trees.
To be a contractor, I think you need to have an affliction. It’s called Deaf I’ll Do It My Way Syndrome (DIDIMWS - look it up). When I had my Workshop Shell built, my wife and I traveled halfway across the country so we could find the right location and orientation for the Shop. I laid it out so that it faced a corner of our driveway for two reasons. 1. That allowed me to easily back into the loading doors without jockeying my truck and, 2. it saved a nice big Oak I had near that spot. When the shell was finally built and I inspected it, the tree was gone and the building was turned 45 degrees from where I had it. When I asked the Builder, he said that I didn’t have it aligned square to the house (which was over 200 feet away) and he thought that looked better. Grrrrr ![]()
Yep. I think you are right about the DIDIMWS.
My Madronas did not look quite as majestic. They were in the middle of 80 foot plus trees and were stretching up to get some sunlight. We did plant this Sumac in our driveway that I absolutely love. My wife does not like it because it is always sending out runners. Now that it is bigger (about 15 feet tall), she is happy it is there.

I have a LONG list of things I have had to fix. This is the latest. Looks like it got dropped. I texted a pic to the contractor… he said that the supplier had in house engineers and they would do a fix to make it as strong as original or replace it. I texted him back that if they went with a repair to send me the stamped structural repair for me to review. He texted back a short time later that they were just going to replace it.
LOL, he found that his customer knew a thing or two!
My first house the builder did that to me and ended up cutting a corner of the attached room. Ended up with an odd shaped (7 sided) entry room coming in from the garage. He did it because it saved him a curb cut at the road for the driveway. I had to deal with bizarre furniture placement for 40 years so he could save a half-hour’s work.
On the current house I was a PITA with my builder - stuff I wanted wasn’t what he normally did but he did it anyway. Only two mistakes in the whole thing & I can easily live with them (well one I fixed already).
Homeowners worry about the silliest things. “Erik, we’ve got this sorted. Ernest, our engineer fixed it.”

Thanks Ernest!

Considering bandaid fixes… my brother and I are at the airport headed to India(sister and husband are diplomats and live there). We are then headed to tour Vietnam with my dad (two tour Vet) my parents and 5/8 siblings will all be there.
Our flight was supposed to leave at 4pm. The captain got on the PA and announced. That there were non structural cracks that needed to be fixed and they didn’t know how or how long it would take to repair. I saw the mechanic out putting speed tape on the housing of the starboard engine. I left to tell my brother it looks like they almost have the plane fixed then walked back to watch some more… upon my return there was a couple watching. I asked if they were done putting on the duct tape… they said “I hope it’s not duct tape…” I told them it’s speed tape and it’s an approved repair… she didn’t seem assured so I told her… don’t worry it’s just the starboard engine that they were working on… if it falls off the other one will take us all the way to the scene of the crash! She started to panic and said “I need to get out of here… I wish they would get us a new plane.” They are now in the line trying to change their flight! ![]()

@72Pony I will have to reuse that Earnest meme in the future. That probably sums up some of this stuff pretty well. The House building looks great. You must watch them the entire time.
It’s not like the old days.
