If you haven’t seen the CraftMates Lockables storage containers, they’re awesome. It solves what I hate about most case/bin storage solutions, which is the risk of stuff mixing/spilling or separating from the kit. They have lock bars that keep the bins closed, but allow you to open one without them all opening, so you don’t risk stuff mixing or spilling besides maybe whatever bins you choose to open. The only things missing for me was fast second order access, meaning open drawer, remove case. Having them stacked on top of each other in the drawer wasn’t that efficient a use of space, but more importantly meant digging into the stack to get th bin you want. Not a problem anymore.
I cannot imagine being that organized. @MrHaNkBoT Henry, you either have a lot of time on your hands or a severe case of OCD. Either way, it is impressive.
Don’t be fooled, those pictures are tight shots on the organized drawers for a reason.
It had basically gotten to a point where something had to be done before the situation got completely out of control, and I wanted to go a bit overboard and make sure I solved the problem for good. Now when I need to add new hardware to my storage system I can just add another sorting bin, and when I run out of slots, print a new tray of holders.
My shop being a 2 stall garage and the quantity of stuff I have in it means I don’t have much room to waste, and anything I can do to make tasks easier pays bigger dividends than it would if I had more space.
If it makes you feel better, here’s my drawer of metric wrenches and sockets. I’m totally fine with how it’s organized, and it’s worked for me for a dozen years. Sockets coarse sorted by drive size and split into >12mm and <12mm trays.
What I said was that it was an organized drawer that worked well enough to not need reinventing. Notice, another tight shot, nothing extraneous besides that drawer?
