Struggling With Open Contours

No matter what I do, I cannot get a full open contour/single line to cut from start to finish. From the start, I have anywhere from a .5 inch to a full inch of material (14g steel) with a nice gouge but not cut through. The line seems to stop OK though. Running an XR with Cut 45 CNC, at 45 amps, good dry air supply.

I’ve tried: no lead-in, no lead-out with .0 overcut,

.10 lead-in perpendicular with no lead-out,

no offset and running slower ipm (150),

The ONLY thing I haven’t messed with is the pierce delay. I can’t remember where that setting is.

What setting am I missing???

Pictures would help to see exactly what’s going on.

Here’s a quick and dirty video on open chains I made -

If it’s simply a “not piercing all the way” issue, it seems your pierce delay may be too short. This issue would occur whether it’s an open loop or not.

For 14 gauge on a Langmuir, I used a 0.5s pierce delay and kept that up until 1/4” or so. 3/16” and below was 0.5s for my setup but you may need to add an extra tenth or two if that doesn’t work.

Thank you so much for the reply, wish I would have said that I am using SheetCam for post processing. I’ll do some research on adjusting the pierce delay though. This was taken just before I took my torch apart since the consumables were getting worn. But this has been the case from the start.

You just do a test cut with your current pierce delay.

You perform another test cut with a slightly longer one, and so forth.

If you haven’t done test cuts at all and got straight to cutting out designs, this is where your lack of personalized chart can hurt. Your settings will vary from others even with the same setup so it’s always best to perform test cuts to find what works best for you.

Make sure that there is not only enough air getting to the plasma cutter but through the plasma cutter. There has been some issues with the razor weld internal regulator causing restriction. This problem can has very similar results to what you are experiencing

Thanks Kwikfab, I have done some test cuts…before I had anything with open contours. Now I have a few designs so I’ll have to set up a few more test cuts and go from there!
