Starting to Powder Coat

First I’ll start off by saying I bought an XR about 6 months ago. I said I was only going to cut stuff and never paint. Well that only lasted about 5 months. Here I am not only cutting stuff, but I started painting ( I hate to Paint!). Over Labor Day Weekend I built an 8’ tall 8’ wide 8’ deep DIY paint booth. Since I have the XR I cut the sides out of 16 ga and framed it with 2x4’s. I precut all the holes to mount the fans, and attach the sides to the wood framing. Although it works great for painting I was quickly over it. Last week I ordered an RC-2 Powder Coating gun with all the goodies, and I bought a 5’ wide 8’ deep 6’ tall oven. I picked the oven up Friday, and I’m working on rearranging my shop to get it moved in. Of course just like the plasma cutting, I have no clue what I’m getting myself into. I just went all in! I also ordered the harbor freight air dryer, to help with the plasma table and my new powder coating setup.

I’ve not really talked much on this forum, but use it all the time for information.

For those of you that are powder coating, how do you price your work? Do you have any other powder coating forums that you suggest? I’m asking here because you’ve helped me with my XR a bunch with the info I’ve found.

Check out a YouTube channel right now powder coating. His older videos are very informative.

Very nice, indeed.

Nice set up, is that oven electric or gas?
How thick are the side walls?

As far as pricing I think it depends on what your coating. Not sure you can charge much for
Signs. You could always find a coater in your area and get a quote on some things.

I agree with Phillip on right now powder coating.

It was a tight fit, but I got it put in place.

I’ve seen right now powder coating, but I’ll go back and check them out again.

Oven is electric 240V, and has 3.75" walls

I’m starting off doing my own signs. I’ve had some great success with some local schools doing sports yard signs. I help groups do fundraisers. They take the orders and collect the $. They pay me when they place the order, and then they deliver the signs.

i have a 60’x60’ shop, but only part of it is temp controlled. I have a 15’x60 section that is temp controlled.

Very nice oven… who built it?

I have a 5ft oven using a hyper smooth gun using fluidized hoppers. I paint more for the company than I do myself. Any questions in particular ask away one of us may know the answers.

Time to build a rack now huh?

Cooper finishing made the oven. They are about 100 miles away from me. I like to shop local if I can, and it seems like good quality. The owner was really helpful as I had LOTS of questions.

Yes, building 2 racks to start off with. Once step at a time. I still need to get the oven wired, so I have a little bit of time to build the racks. Hoping to be powder coating something by this weekend.

Yeah, thankfully I’m getting orders 10-15 at a time…

Shop is almost ready to start powder coating…

My RC-2 and all the goodies showed up yesterday, and I should be getting my first order from Prismatic Powder later today.

Just need to decide if I’m going to wire the oven, or if I’m going to call someone to come do it for me… I’m leaning on calling someone, I used to work for an electrical contractor and I think they can buy everything way cheaper than I can. I need about 100’ of 4 ga wire to power the oven. Then it needs ran in conduit, and bla bla bla might just hit the easy button and call them. I have enough other shit I need to get done so I can start my new adventure.

Also before anyone says it, I realized today that I probably wasted my $ on the plastic curtains. I bought them before I decided to pull the trigger on the powder coating. Trying to keep paint in the booth and everything else out. I guess I can still use them if I ever decide that I need to paint something in there. Dual purpose right!

I spent a couple hours watching YouTube and Right Now Powder Coating. Your right he does have a lot of information there. Thanks for the heads up to go back and look a little more at his channel.

I think his older content is more informative. Seems a lot of channels are that way.

Unknown Coatings is a good youtube channel also. He has a facebook group as well.
