Primeweld Cut60 Reduced Amperage Readings - Solved

For about the last 6 months the maximum amperage value in the display has been gradually declining when the knob is adjusted to 60amps. Since my cutter is over 5 years old and well past warranty and I cut mostly 16-22 gauge for sign hobby, I hadn’t addressed the issue.

However, within the last few weeks when set to 60 amps the display was reading only about 40 amps. Also, when not cutting, the display would fluctuate 5-7 amps. While I didn’t actually measure the amperage being produced, I could tell it had been trending downward.

So I called Primeweld and spoke to Matt in customer service. I told him I knew I was past warranty and he confirmed 5 years and several months. But… that was the last time the warranty was even mentioned. He said he needed to consult a tech and would call me back.

Return call he said the advise was to replace the display and the “upper control board”. He said I could either ship it back at my expense and they would do the parts/labor for free, or they’d send me the parts and I could do it. I said send me the parts and if it’s beyond me, I’ll send the cutter and the parts back to them.

Got them installed this afternoon. Fixed the issue. Other than getting the wire harness connectors unplugged (adhesive was used originally) the job was pretty straight forward.

These are the boards that were replaced.

I wanted to create this thread so if anyone does a search for Cut60 reduced amperage, but also to give credit to Primeweld Customer Service for rushing me these parts (rec’d 2nd day after call) and for providing them at no cost to me even though my warranty expired 2 years ago. I was honestly expecting to need to decide whether to put several hundred dollars into a 5yr old machine or buy new.

Thanks for posting this, I’ll keep my eye out for voltage drop.

I forgot to mention above, that the new display board needed to be calibrated to my machine. They never mentioned it when talking on phone, so maybe not always necessary.

Before I re-assembled my cabinet, I plugged in the cutter to make sure the repair had worked. The display read from 24 - 70 amps. There is an adjustment on the board. I set dial to the low amp end and adjusted to 20 amps first. Amazingly it hit 60 on the nose when I went up.
