I’m entering the power coat world to put the final touches on creations with my XR and Titan 25T.
Vulcan 16 is on order and looking at the eastwood 100Kv HotCoat system, Looks like its a fairly good unit with lots of adjustment and options like fluidizing hopper.
Now for the last piece of the puzzle (Spray Booth) Ive been searching high and low but looks like its table top eastwood unit with a box fan and filter or a massive booth. see alot of home made units out there and may be the way to go, with limited space and 30x30 oven capability i d like to stay in the 3’x3’ to 4’x4’ range and if things progress ill expand later as needed.
Please share any ideas, pictures of your spray booth setups to spark some ideas and see what works and direction to head.
I just saw a video of a guy converting a metal storage cabinet to a powder booth. Just an old metal tall storage cabinet with the shelves removed. Cut holes in the back and mounted two fans with filters. Open the doors and you have a shallow spray booth.
The Lights are from Amazon, and the exhaust goes out through the roof. The filters are from Cook Manufacturing. I wired the unit myself with a magnetic motor controller.
It works really well. Almost all the overspray goes out through the exhaust system, and cleaning up with an air chuck is easy.
OK last question before i order a cook mfg unit, dose the 3’ wide by 5’ tall work well or do you wish you went 4’ wide, i know the vulcan is only 30” wide but i figured i could also use booth for any spray paint i do as well. But same time im limited on room till i move operations or build a new garage, either one is a few years out so smaller the better for now!
I don’t, but it is plenty big enough for me. The Vulcan 16 can only fit a 30x28 part.
It comes with a 12” axial fan on top. I would get the motor controller and whatever you need to exhaust it outside. All the lights and wiring were my creation. It works great. I also installed a stand-alone ground rod outside the building and got less than .25 ohms to earth. When you’re ready, I will send pictures and the parts I used.
The axial fan pulls almost every particle out the vent. I have used it 50 times and it still looks brand new. A shot with an air gun and it’s clean.
I did this this morning. It’s a front rim for a 1974 Harley 125cc dirt bike made in Italy for them after the dreaded AMF takeover, which almost destroyed them. It was for a buddy of mine, and the condition was almost terrible. But he wanted it powder-coated assembled.
While the AMF bikes were not wonderful, the takeover actually SAVED the Motor Company. AMF brought deep pockets allowing HD to buy modern manufacturing equipment, (and those Ameracci bikes did quite well in the racing arena). But God Bless Willie G for rescuing the company after the honeymoon was over with AMF. (Wish he was around to rescue it again)
I built a 3x3x6 oven a couple of years ago. I think total cost for materials was around $1800. It’s super heavy and runs on 240v electric. About to build a new one that is 5x7x8 and runs on gas because the new shop has gas and I’d like to be able to powder coat full length pieces. Anyhow I did a video series on the build if you’re interested in what the build process looks like including building and wiring the control panel.
I also built a spray booth, here’s a video of the spray booth build. The spray booth is relatively simple to build and can be done in a day. Make sure you get a fan that moves serious CFM, a powerful squirrel cage fan is probably best.
Columbia Coatings has good powder, but their customer service is ass. I had the Hyper Smooth 3.0 LED (still have it if anyone wants to buy it I’ll sell it cheap, I bought an Electron professional spray setup and never touch the Hyper Smooth anymore). Electron sprayers are fantastic if you’re ready to step up to a more professional unit, but they aren’t cheap (mine was about $4500 shipped from Turkey).
Sure, let me get it all together so I can see what all I have. It’s been on a shelf since I bought the Electron so I need to make sure I have everything, pretty sure I have several powder bottles and extra rubber tubing for each one. Give me the weekend to have a look, I’m starting the Crossfire XR build this weekend so I’m gonna be pretty busy.
