Motorgard filter necessary?

I apologize for asking again if this topic has already been beat to death, but…

For my home/hobbyist system (Crossfire XL w/ Razorweld Cut 45), is an in-line filter/desiccant unit like this,

sufficient or should I also add a Motorguard filter?

My compressed air system already has a “Franzinator” (home made air cooler) between the pump and tank, and has a water separator on the main discharge line from the tank. I don’t expect I’ll be running the plasma table more than a few hours on weekends. I also have a small powder coat oven in my workshop that could be used to dry out the desiccant beads when necessary.

You will definitely want something that can catch any dust or pieces of of beads that my make it into the lines.

I personally don’t use a motor guard I use the disposable screw on filters which have a similar filter media as the motor guard. I put one on each air hose I use.

Also consider oil from the compressor I have a very old one, that has way to many hours on it and it will pull a little oil out of the crankcase. Not bad for tools but NOT GOOD for tips. My Miller tips are a little pricey and since I put the motor guard filter on I am getting a little more life out of them.
Just my two cents

That is a good point. The filter in the link says it has a water and oil separator.

Do you think those catch all the oil? I don’t think those cheap, oil / moisture seperators really do much. But thats just me

Well I am sure it’s not the best. But to catch the majority for a weekend warrior maybe. Me personally I have 3 separators . I can’t say they are better quality than this one. They certainly are rated for more volume.

I don’t really call $132 cheap. Is it the best? No! It hard to tell someone to go spend a grand on air quality equipment that may only use it on a occasion.

I started out with a very minimal system and it worked for me for a while. I let my setup show me what I needed to change. Then let the hobby pay for improvement.
