Lead screw rust removal best practices?

Guys, I’m in the southern Philippines and rust removal/prevention is a daily concern. My Crossfire has light rust on the lead screws. I plan to remove them, de-rust them and preserve with Odie’s Oil. What practices should I follow with the removal, reassembly of the lead screws?

Thanks in advance.

You might find that vinegar will do well for you. If really bad, I would take the screws off the table and wrap with clean cloth or paper towel, soak it with vinegar and cover with plastic wrap. Check it in 8 hours (assuming it is table vinegar). If it is 20% or stronger, I would probably check in 4 hours. Use a very gentle scotch pad. Rinse really well with water.

Some people use WD-40, some use graphite and some use silicone spray once it is clean. Each time you use the table, give the lead screws a rinse with clean water, blow dry and then recoat with the lube of your choice. That should keep the rust down.

I assume you don’t have the active z screw??? If you did, you have to limit any water or oil on the IHS contact points. Langmuir recommends graphite for this lead screw.

Edit: Sorry, I did not read that carefully. Go to the assembly instructions and that will get you on track:

Thanks much for the answer. I have a superb rust remover recipe if you want it.
Don

Never hurts to have options. Please and thank you!

The recipe:

  • Per 1L of H2O
    1: 100grams Citric Acid.
    2: 40grams Sodium Carbonate / 63Grams Sodium Bicarbonate / 30grams Sodium Hydroxide.
After reaction has completed, add final ingredient.
3: Arbitrary amount of liquid dish soap.

NOTE: Sodium carbonate is the only second ingredient needed. The sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide are listed in case sodium carbonate is unavailable.

You are now a book mark for me:

Cool. It’s just as good at mill scale removal as well. Amazing stuff.

Jim, it might be a good idea to add this note: NOTE: Sodium carbonate is the only second ingredient needed. The sodium bicarbonate and sodium hydroxide are listed in case sodium carbonate is unavailable.

Rust rush remover could be the way to remove it, I have faced that problem before, then it’s really boring. That’s why I decide to remove it with some products.
