Inconsistent air pressure

Hello all,

I have a razorweld razorcut 45. I’m having some cutting issues and I have tracked it down to air pressure.

I have a regulator right before the machine so I can see most of the time the pressure is between 90 - 120 psi. On the machine it varies wildly.

When the machine cuts perfect the psi pre-cut is at ~80 then at cut it’s ~60.

When the machine barfs the psi pre-cut is at ~40 and during the cutting phase ~5. After failing the machine has a huge issue building pressure. The regulator says 120 the machine gains a psi/10 mins. Really odd and I am unable to reproduce what causes this to function correctly and fail. Thinking maybe the internal regulator?!?

If anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Brandon

I would say you have trouble with ( your)air hose, regulator or compressor.

It really does.soumd like your air hose, filters or fittings are choking it down
Others have had problems with Harbor Freight or other Chinese hoses delivering the volume of air required.
More info is needed:
What size airline?
How long is the air line?
What kind of filters, water separator?
How many horse power and what size tank and how much cfm is your compressor?

There are.alot of variables that could be adding up to your problems.

I have

  • 1/2 pex
  • running about 50’
  • a filter
  • a regulator
  • 3 hp
  • 60 gal tank
  • 10 CFM @ 90 PSI, 11 CFM @ 40 PSI

(tank)---------50’----------[filter]-[regulator]-[razorweld]

I should mention all the line, the fittings, the regulator, the filter and the compressor pump are brand new.

The thing i don’t understand is the regulator right outside the machine(5" away) says 120psi(never below 90 psi) but the machine could be anywhere from 5 - 80 psi from cut attempt to cut attempt.

Take the regulator off the back of the plasma cutter and hook the hose up and see if it works better. If it still don’t then the internal regulator is bad.

Great suggestion, ill give that a try and report back.

Open up the RW. There’s a regulator in there. Bet it’s cracked and leaking air. You shouldn’t need more than 80psi on your regulator just before the RW.

You don’t have enough air flow to your cutter. There is some restriction between the compressor and the cutter like your air line is too small or too long is the compressor running all the time while it’s cutting maybe the capacity of the compressor is too small ?

Sorry when I replied it looked like there were no other replies so sorry if I repeated the above advice

Thank you to all who replied. I tee’d off the line right before the regulator and hooked it into my air dryer. Now the only reduction is the 1/4 in into the back of the machine. It works perfect now. Did 5 cuts and had no issues. Air went from 70 pre-cut and down to 65 during the cut and back up without issue. I really appreciate the help!

This isn’t a fix for you as you (bstaley) have figured your issues out…But maybe someone else is looking for answers.
If you have a long run of hose from the compressor to the cutter you may want to add a tank near the cutter. The tank can be 10-30 gallons and is just an accumulator no compressor. This will help smooth out the pressures when the cutter is running. This will also work to some extent with smaller (under sized) compressors but it will shorten there lives because they still have to run longer to fill the volume of the tanks. Smaller tanks can be found cheap ($25-$50) on Craig’s list, FB market place, flea markets, auctions, etc with no compressors.
Good Luck,
Bruce
