You can just click CUTTING → 2D Profile and it works just the same.
I say this because in teaching people (when they’re watching my screen share on Zoom), they get confused when I do the whole right-click → New Operation → Cutting → 2D Profile so I just tell them to click 2D Profile up top like the first time.
Some people have multiple setups on the screen. They may have a number of objects or using different materials and have setups related to a specific need they are going to cut out. If they have not highlighted the appropriate “setup” then they might get the toolpath showing up under the wrong setup. It is just a way to be sure it is assigned to the correct setup.
So Yes, while I agree your way is more streamlined, I have seen the other mistake happen.
good afternoon everyone! I hope its ok to reply back into this thread, I am having another similar issue, (ill post pics below) I am trying to make a simple name tag with 4 holes for mounting, the sign is 6"x3" with a simple font. When I am trying to post process, the only way I can get it to pick up the letter V is to “flip direction” which makes it look like it will pierce inside my finished product instead of in the middle of the letter like the rest ? I had to bridge my letter e and the 3 dots are still there from my line / trimming, is that normal or is this causing an issue? I watched a few tutorials on similar creations and they always are able to click “Face Contours” and the program selects everything for them, for some reason mine only picks up the outer line and then the only way I can get the letters and 4 dots is to individually click closed chain link a bunch of times. Is my object and font just too small for what I am trying to do ?
You had three different bodies in your design and the setup was assigned to a body that did not have the letters: that is why it was only trying to cut the outside. I turned off the visibility of the two bodies without letters, reassigned the body to both setup and picked the face contours of the correct body in the contour selections. I also reduced the tolerance to 0.004 and removed the pierce clearance.
Thanks again Jim !! How did I end up with so many bodies? I tried starting from scratch 3 times and ran into the same issue, and I just looked and they all had multiple bodies again. What am I doing that I should not be? Haha
Just keep checking that browser tree on the left as you go along. Often I will see I have several bodies when I had performed extrude several times but expected a “cut” or a “join.” If you look at the timeline on the bottom, there are three extrudes showing.
Here is your second extrusion. You picked the Profile and that was correct to do. (Make sure in the sketch palette that you have “Profile” checked or it might not show up correctly to select).
You are more than welcomed. I find this enjoyable as it helps solidify my understanding of the program.
It took me 6 weeks before I could get a design to CAM completely. It was a very frustrating thing for me. I have always felt I was a fast learner but I guess age creeps up on all of us.
