Hi group, I have made and saved a design that I want to use for several projects adding different text and things to each one. so how and where do I save this so that I can bring it up and use it each time without making changes to the original?
I think it’s pretty simple but this is my weakest area…
Myself I just use my Fusion save file and go back in the history to make my modifications.
Fusion 360s parametric engine will drive it forward from there. you may have to make a couple corrections going forward through time.
Anything that doesn’t update properly will be highlighted in yellow or red in the history line.
Make it a component and then just drag it into a new design to use it and edit in place. If you want to mod only THAT instance, then, in the project window, right click on it to make a copy. I’ll then rename the copy to …_Modx
Then I can modify that one without affecting other assemblies.
@TomWS That’s definitely a better way of going about it.
Using in current design and then break the connection.
Actually, Fusion 360 is quite civilized about it. Suppose you use an external component in a design and find that you need to make significant changes to it that aren’t used elsewhere. Go to the project folder, and make a copy of the original component. Then, in your assembly that uses the component, right click on the component in the component list and select Replace Component with new one (or some such - I don’t have Fusion open at the moment). The copied component will replace the original easily and then edit in place will allow you to do the required mods.
Thanks TomWS, Just don’t understand how to make it a component or how to drag it into a design. I also want to be able to use it several times.
In your new design, have the project list open and literally drag the component into your design. You’ll get an instance you can position anywhere.
Want more of them, keeping dragging them into your design. It’s that simple.
I went to the file drop down and saved as same project name and added “base model” to be able to recognize it later, I did this on a junk practice drawing first and it seemed to work then I did it to my good one and it made the copy but the original of it reverted back to the very start of the drawing. Got many hours in it and just don’t want to lose it now. my idea was to use the copy to modify and keep making a copy before I modify the next so I will have for next time.
That was my work around but not much of a computer expert…
GOT IT ! my big dumb ass tried it and it worked, Thanks so much for the help to both of you as this is a game changer for this project.
So I thought it was solved but when I open my copy I can’t edit on it. I opened the original and can right click on sketch and can then edit but not the copy, Ideas please…
