sand blasting off the dross think in theory it should work
I wouldn’t recommend it at all it. if you have a recycling blast cabinet it will clog you up constantly. When you get your settings, right dross isn’t difficult to remove at all. To help an overnight soak in vinegar also works wonders.
If you have that much dross and is hard to remove, then you need to fine tune your settings. I have little to no dross and what dross there is it will come off simply dropping piece flat on shop floor or scrape off with flat piece of steel.
I’ll second the drop it on the floor when done cutting and soak in vinegar for a day. If its still hard to get off adjust your settings. I’m thinking you’re too slow. Bump the speed up in 10 ipm increments.
why I asked is if it removes dross when I am done it is all prepared for paint
if you have hard dross, it will still be difficult to remove sandblasting alone. what does come off will get caught in the sandblasting nozzle and cause issues if you use a blast cabinet the reuses media.
Use an angle grinder with a wire wheel for dross. To prep for paint you’re going to need to degrease and wipe down anyway. Sandblasting does not sound efficient or sufficient.
I agree, there are much better ways to remove dross as everyone has pointed out
Post a pic of a cut part, so people can see if your getting the normal amount of dross.
this post is not about dross its about saving time
You asked about using a sandblaster to remove dross. Everyone assumes dross is a issue.
In short I think it will take longer to remove with a blaster. Then you will spend even more time cleaning dross out of your blasting equipment unless you are using single use only blaster.
If it is that time consuming to remove dross from your cuts you may need to tweak your settings
I guess every one is to focused on the dross at present I clean my dross with a wire brush on a grinder then I sand it with 60 git sand paper to remove all the dirt and grime then it it with 120 grit to get the steel smooth and clean for finishing why I asked about sand blasting the dross off was if it removed the dross I would end up with a sand blasted finish ready product in one step the question was will sand blasting remove dross not a problem with dross
Yes it will but as others have stated it will stop up the sand blaster and after you’ve had the joy of trying to get all that sh!t out you’ll wish you’d never seen a sandblaster. Been there done that…
If you want to save time, then tweak settings until there is no dross.
1/4" no dross because I tweaked one setting at a time until I got these results, lots of tweaking on scrap. Got to put effort into plasma cutting to get great results, every machine will be a little different.
