Flood coolant biology

Had, well chose to use flood coolant on my mill today, have not used it much at all, too messy.

Started it flowing and whoa buddy, that’s ripe. Stunk up my trailer something awful.

What do you guys use for flood coolant on your lathe and or mill? Anti fungal and bacteria?

Granted mine was a year old, and all I did was top it off earlier this year. The mist cooling containers and the bucket that I store it in seems to keep ok, the mill and the lathe however are open top reservoir.

Fusion 2240 in mine. I change mine every month or so. Depending on its use, a year-old coolant would be ripe. I like the Fusion stuff. It works much better than the original crap that I got with the mill. The mister thing is an option I’m considering, but I’m not sure it will be any benefit than what’s going on now. You have to clean up the enclosure anyway.

Castrol Hysol H20. Seems decent. Has some anti-microbial properties. Just got 5 gal last week and have been happy so far.

get back with me in 6 months.

Further reading up on the matter pretty much says it is part of the fun. Trap oil is the biggest contributor. Second is letting it sit static. Oil skimmers to get the tramp oil, and some sort of aeration or circulation pump.

I may have to look into a super light cutting oil, non water based, and run that.
