Experience with PlasmaDyn parts on eEbay?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience purchasing or using PlasmaDyn parts on ebay? I’ve exclusively used Hypertherm machines and parts with a variety of industrial tables and reading about some of the issues with chinese made parts, would like to continue to use Hypertherm and their style parts with a euro style machine.

David has been using a Plasmadyn torch but a different setup. He has good advice and may have some insight for you:

I’m pretty sure he has an actual hypertherm torch that was modified by plasmadyne. He even says in his post that the consumables they sent were not genuine hypertherm and did not cut as well as actual hypertherm consumables.

My torch is an actual Hypertherm torch that was attached to a torch lead that fits my Everlast.

The Plasmadyn consumables that came on it cut with a bevel. I swapped them out with genuine Hypertherm parts and everything worked well.

I can’t speak to the longevity, because I only used them for some test cuts. Maybe the ones I got were an anomaly, but I’ve used Hypertherm parts ever since.

Appreciate the answers and info. I do see they have oem Hypertherm for mutiple machine options. Im just wondering how their non-oem torch fares.

I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole unless you like troubleshooting.

I agree with @brownfox. Buy a genuine torch and use genuine consumables. Pay now or pay 5X

Again, appreciate the responses, but isnt that the same as “only buy a Lincoln or Miller”? Or for better context here, “only buy a Koike Aronson or Messer”?

Well I would never buy a Lincoln or Miller but that is just me.

In the Plasma Cutter world, gotta say it’s Hypertherm for the win. No question.

Hypertherm plasma cutters are commercial units made for the contractors. This is why they have been so popular over the years.

No, not necessarily. People get amazing reliable results with cutters and torches other than hypertherm.

But I would not trust aftermarket parts. Seen too many threads where problems arise. Sure there are probably people running them and doing ok, but it’s a gamble. If you have the time to maybe have to do more troubleshooting, then the money savings might be worth it.

Absolutely.
“Hypertherm plasma cutters are commercial units made for the contractors”
Hypertherm has been the leader in induatrial applications for the past several years.
Both in hand cutting and automated applications. That doesn’t mean anything other than Hypertherm doesn’t or will not work well, particularly when you are looking at application and utilization.

That is true.

I guess from the standpoint of helping people with issues on this forum, trying to get their desired results, it makes everyone’s life easier when the cutter does not need to be considered the problem.

There have only been a few times that I have witnessed in the last 2 1/2 years that a Hypertherm unit turned out having the hiccup. When Hypertherm is not working right, it generally throws an error so you don’t have to guess.

There are lots of people getting good success with less expensive cutters including the PrimeWeld, Everlast and Harbor Freight Titanium everyday.

You coupled two words/phrases together with your title: Ebay and “Plasmadyn parts.” That gives visions of experimentation. Pandora’s box.

I guess none of us have actually “experimented” with Ebay and Plasmadyn parts and we are only sharing the feelings of pain that others have shared with us. No one knows for sure how it would turn out. Try it and I promise I won’t say “We tried to steer you a different direction” if things go less than you’d hoped. But you might have to remind me that I promised.

Compared to everything else in this hobby/business, buying some consumables from eBay is a cheap test. Just buy them and see if they fit your needs.
